Hey guys. I'm looking to spool 2 rods with wire. Where can I buy some? I'm in the Ottawa area, but I can pickup in trenton/have delivered. How about a twilly tip? What type/pound test should I use? I'm a newbie to salmon and need something fairly easy to work with. I'm running okuma convector 30's.
Thanks all!

Yes you need a twilly tip. Run 20-30lb test. If you cant find any around you could order some mason makes some good stuff. Its pretty thin for the diameter so you may wanna smaller reel but its up to you ive seen a screamer peel 800ft haha

For some one new to the wire game, I wouldn't recommend 20 lb. Not very forgiving if you make a mistake. Manufactures are Malin, Mason, American Wire or Torpedo wire. All good brands.

Chris at the Reel Thing Tackle Shop in Wellington carries it but not sure if he still has stock.

Thanks guys. It sounds like 30lb would be ideal. What's the best "kind"? I've heard of single strand, 7 strand, 49 strand..... I'm running these off of TDR's, not the best for wire, but I want to see if I like it before upgrading.

Most guys run 7 strand......some use the 19 strand torpedo wire. I have always run Mason/Malin 30# 7 strand.

If you get it, you should learn tying knots with stranded wire before getting on the boat. I've been using this one with good results so far.

I'd be interested to see if anyone else has a good knot for stranded wire.

Hey Dave,

That's the knot that most of us use except at the last part we use a double overhand.
Just roll the swivel end thru 1 more time.

We also use a glass bead between the swivel and the overhand knot. Just prevents the swivel end from getting into the roller guide tip. Not all that important.

Awesome guys. Should that knot work on 19 strand too? How do you tie it to the reel and do you need backing?

Chewy. I add some florocarbon leader maker backing so the wire doesn't spin on the arbor. I use an Albright knot at the backing and only 4 or 5 ft just to get a few wraps on the arbor. If you spool a 1000' of wire on a size 30 reel you don't need anything else.

I've been using 19 strand torpedo with no damage to the guides so far but I only get out 8-12 times a year for salmon. I can see why the charters and tournament guys use the rollers though.
