Well it is about that time of the year to search the Big Lake out of Wellington for Kings. Got out with a couple buddies this morning. Hit the water at 6:15. Ran to Wicked Bank shoal off Salmon Pt. The water was coooooooool. Fished until about 9, didn't mark much or move a rod. Pulled lines and ran to a place where I usually find kings early. The four of us set up an 8 rod spread and the search began. Temps both surface and down looked descent. Pick our speed up a bit and whacked the first king of the season that I know about.

Most guys are fishing lakers and browns but we went hunting kings. Our spread included 2 riggers, 2 wire divers, some short cores and a medium length copper. The target was kings and bows.

First king of the season landed by John McNair.

By the way, our second location was way west of Salmon Pt.

Al

Nice job Al. Weird seeing the kicker on the starboard side of the boat.

Now I know who took Al out. Knew it wasn't the "Grandslam". The e-tecs were my first clue. :D :D

We went looking for a King today in the same area. Only saw a few good hooks 50 down over 150 FOW that were likely them but couldn't get them to hit. We tried until about noon then headed for 40-50 FOW and caught a few lakers 5' off bottom before heading in.

Lol. It was a great first trip of the season. I thought we were staring down a skunk when the dipsy went off. I half wondered if it was a laker but when the fish took over 200' of line on the first run I knew we had a decent King. I was pretty excited.

I have been trying to get out with Al for a long time.

When I first started to get into salmon fishing about 10 years ago I PM'd Al on spoonpullers and asked if I could trade him a cottage rental on West Lake for a day on the water just soaking up some knowledge. He told me he would be happy to take me out but wouldn't take me up on the cottage rental as he lived on West Lake.    Small world. I have since asked him a lot of questions and he has helped me out along the way but believe it or not this is the first time we have hooked up to fish together on the same boat. It was a great day and a lot of fun. Exciting to get the first king to grace the deck for 2014. And boy of boy did it taste good. Nothing like fresh salmon on the bbq. I made a little video I have to post about pulling the pin bones out before I bbq'd it.

Thank you Kevin and Al for a great day!!

Here is another shot of that fish. What beautiful colour

Scott... Thank you for inviting me out for the day. It was a great time. You are for sure a class act. Being in the boat with you and Al , cant get much better than that. To be part of the team that got the first king of the year but the biggest thing was to watch Jonathan get his pb fish, that was great to see. Thanks again and have a great season chasing the almighty king!!

Nice fish! Did you guys mark much bait out there? We were out on Sunday didn't mark a single bait ball around the island or scotch bonnet shoal, this was out in deeper water though 80-150'.
