Last summer, I had a meeting with the Deputy Mayor, the head of Parks and Recreation and 2 city councilors to discuss how woefully inadequate parking and launching facilities are around Kingston. I pointed out that the city is losing out on huge sport tourism dollars by not promoting access to Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence for smaller boats and fishing tournaments.
As a result of that meeting, I was asked to sit on the City of Kingston Waterfront Master Plan Committee tasked with formulating a long term vision for all waterfront property within Municipal boundaries. This includes Lake Ontario from Collins Bay in the west to east of Grass Creek Park, the Inner Harbour, Cataraqui River, Colonel By and the River Styx.
I’ve spent the last 6 months trying to push for better facilities and now I need your help. The Waterfront committee is hosting an open house public meeting next Wednesday June 25th starting at 7:00 in the Press Lounge at Portsmouth Olympic Harbour, 53 Yonge St.
I need as many anglers as possible to show up and voice their concerns over the lack of existing facilities for boaters and shoreline fisherman. The more people that show up and complain, the more likely the city is to take our complaints seriously and do something about it.

We need to do this. If we don't, we will lose all access and we know there isn't enough parking. Look what happened up at the "Old Woolen Mill".

So many shore line fishing spots have been shut down over the years. Fort Henry and RMC shore line , Collins bay Bridge, West side of the causeway and the pier near the psychiatric hospital to name a few. I always head away from Kingston to fish the surrounding shore lines even though I live here... They should allow the use of the pier at Olympic harbour at night (been told I could not fish there at night in the past by security guards) and open up the shore line at the Kingston pen now that it is closed.

Even more parking and access will be lost at Portsmouth now that the soil on the east side is contaminated and fenced off and no parking or docking is allowed.....

A lot of the fishing spots were closed off by the federal government rather that the municipal.

I've been posting on my FB feed and hoping lots of people show up to discuss.

IMO - it would be tragic if this Committee focused on waterfront trails and the likes and forget about us boaters and fisher-people.

I think the launches should be monitored and routinely assessed for damages and improper usage just as the roads are. If repairs are required, there needs to be funds to do so and if not readily available, Council needs to be open to allowing funds transferred for this just like they did with the pot holes.
