As a provincial government employee with another ministry I can tell you that budgets are being slashed across government ministries not just MNR. They are also looking for new ways to generate revenue that would not be seen as a new tax or increased taxes. This news is in line with that trend. I think you will see more of the same from other ministries as the government struggles to meet the commitment of elimnating the deficit by 2016/17. It will hit us all in the pocket book.
And the budgets of all ministries should be slashed. The average tax payer is not getting value for the $$ they have no choice but to contribute. A bloated workforce with job and task redundancy. (see the 300,000 lost manufacturing jobs and the eerily similar increase by 300,000 in public sector jobs, all so the Wynne/McGuilty gang could say "look who good we are doing on job growth. No lost jobs here.") Salaries that are bloated to almost 3X what those jobs would be worth in the private sector. Government employees with guaranteed benefits and pensions, all subsidized by the tax payer no less, who has no such guarantee. Rampant waste and over spending on services those ministries purchase because no one cares to check the "oh if the government is paying then the price per unit is $50, not the $20 I just quoted you" problems of procurement. Managers who are sure to over spend each year to justify budget increases in the next year and beyond, even if that spending is wasteful. And please, show me one program where any branch of the current government has proven they can manage it responsibly. Everyone knows the current laundry list of scandal and records of poor management. Not to mention the government run health care system which is one incident away from a national catastrophe.
So yeah, the govt is looking for new ways to generate revenue because they have been wasting the billions of $$$ they already extort from us. Why not start with revamping and making more efficient the wasteful system THEY have set up. No sympathy here my friend. Sympathy for the average Joe who can expect that he and his grandchildren are going to pay for all of this with a steady decline in service. None for the "Cash Strapped" whoa is me government and the ministries they prop up.
