My dad is 82, spent his life fishing and hunting, he no longer hunts but does like to come out on the boat a couple times a year. I think it's great that after all the years he has spent supporting and encouraging others to participate and support the outdoor environment that he no longer needs to pay for the privilege.
PS how does one herd knitting ???

I personally think seniors should pay. I think all you guys that are older and no longer need to pay, need to think about the fishery that you all say you care so much about. Those in this country who are under the age of 50 are about to get screwed real hard. While you pensioner's worked hard for your pension, destroyed our environment because you waste and want, we will be left picking up the pieces. The pension plans will not be around for us, the environment will be devastated, and we will pay higher taxes to continue to pay for the bloated services that you have you created a dependence on. In order for you to enjoy your golden years, we will pay higher taxes and fees on everything. For the short time you have left you will undoubtedly pay higher gas prices, but so will I, and will pay even higher prices in my golden years, if the earth still exists, to prop you up and clean up your mess. I will pay a hundred dollars a year to go fishing, if it means I can pay less income tax to prop you up. Also think about this, while I have no problem with opening the doors to immigration, I don't believe many of the immigrants care as much about our fisheries as home grown Canadians. They will use resources at an alarming rate, and deplete the fishery even more. However, allowing more immigrants in to our country will be the only way to pay for the growing population of seniors who require health care and Canada pension.
Not looking for a fight, but wanted to add the perspective of someone who has a lot longer to pay feeds than those who have a few years left.

I have no problem with kids being free because if they get into fishing that's a licence paying customer for a number of years once they hit 18. But to your point about limits, might be a good idea for a kids limit to be part of the parent's limit, I think that would be a fair trade off. Speaking of trade off maybe the right approach is for a free senior catch and release licence but they need to pay if they want a full conservation or sport licence.

Now there's something that is a good compromise and makes a lot of sense. That's why the government would never go for it.

I don't think anyone that needs to get elected is going to make it illegal for kids to go fishing.

Thanks Dave, very well put, but I think at this point I have no choice but to wave the white flag
and join the Coburg Herd knitting Club. No seniors license fees, and no limit on the number of
mittens I make for the fisher people who kiss provincial government asses.

Bottom line is you cannot whine about no enforcement (see half the post is march and April) and be happy about budget shortfalls. If seniors pay some and they hike fees I am fine with that to maintain enforcement. Think about the fee amortized over the pounds of fish you can keep which offsets food costs. It's cents per lb not dollars.

The real question is can the shortfall be remedied with changes/restructuring of the MNR. I would say 99% that is the case but the majority of everyone out there just voted Liberal and they would rather tax than make real change. So, we all get what we deserve. Bottom line. Don't whine about the issues when we put the decision makers on place after repeatedly showing they are not fiscally responsible decision makers.

Not illegal for kids to fish. If kids and seniors had a free conservation license and seniors could opt to purchase a sport licence, conservation would be better and the young and the elderly could still benefit from the opportunity of going fishing for free. If the senior chose to get a sport license that would be a benefit as well.

Discussing the issue here brought out a great idea in my opinion and now I will take this opportunity to send a letter to both the OFAH and the MNR with this as a suggestion. The more that express their opinions on this the better chance of having a good compromise met. Otherwise the city people who were surveyed from Toronto will be heard instead of the people who it actually effects.

Dave

As a provincial government employee with another ministry I can tell you that budgets are being slashed across government ministries not just MNR. They are also looking for new ways to generate revenue that would not be seen as a new tax or increased taxes. This news is in line with that trend. I think you will see more of the same from other ministries as the government struggles to meet the commitment of elimnating the deficit by 2016/17. It will hit us all in the pocket book.

And the budgets of all ministries should be slashed. The average tax payer is not getting value for the $$ they have no choice but to contribute. A bloated workforce with job and task redundancy. (see the 300,000 lost manufacturing jobs and the eerily similar increase by 300,000 in public sector jobs, all so the Wynne/McGuilty gang could say "look who good we are doing on job growth. No lost jobs here.") Salaries that are bloated to almost 3X what those jobs would be worth in the private sector. Government employees with guaranteed benefits and pensions, all subsidized by the tax payer no less, who has no such guarantee. Rampant waste and over spending on services those ministries purchase because no one cares to check the "oh if the government is paying then the price per unit is $50, not the $20 I just quoted you" problems of procurement. Managers who are sure to over spend each year to justify budget increases in the next year and beyond, even if that spending is wasteful. And please, show me one program where any branch of the current government has proven they can manage it responsibly. Everyone knows the current laundry list of scandal and records of poor management. Not to mention the government run health care system which is one incident away from a national catastrophe.

So yeah, the govt is looking for new ways to generate revenue because they have been wasting the billions of $$$ they already extort from us. Why not start with revamping and making more efficient the wasteful system THEY have set up. No sympathy here my friend. Sympathy for the average Joe who can expect that he and his grandchildren are going to pay for all of this with a steady decline in service. None for the "Cash Strapped" whoa is me government and the ministries they prop up.

Drop the license altogether save on administration and enforcement of the license and tax me the real cost of MNR less the BS and make fishing legal for everyone again. .

Tax foreign corporations for the wind (natural resource) that they use in the wind turbines if they need cash, they use our resource for free and make tons of $ doing it.
