Picton Harbour's probably inaccessible now (unless you've got an icebreaker), however........

Any idea of what the conservation area ramp is like (open water?). Seen it, know where it is, but have never launched from it. Looks like it might last till well after Picton ramp goes into hibernation.

Would appreciate a reply from anyone. It's a hell of a long drive from Newmarket just to wish you'd brought your skates.

Weird weather, last year we got out of Picton Harbour on Dec. 22, broke through ice all the way out into the open water only to discover.....

HEY!!! LOOK AT THAT!!! Conservation Area ramp.

Launched there two years ago when bay was frozen over .Had one of my best nights fishing.It can be a little tricky getting in and out with the water being low, and no lights a night ,but well worth it.As long as the water is open from ramp to cplant i will be there this weekend .

Could someone please give directions to the Conservation Area ramp from the 401. Are you able to launch an 18.5' boat at this ramp? Also, any info on parking, salt or sand required, etc would be greatly appreciated. Where is the ramp in relation to the Cement Plant?

P.S. Tried Telegraph Narrows last weekend, thought they would be in thick by now. Marked very few fish. Caught zilch. Last year this area was hot by mid Nov. thru mid Dec.

I rec'd this in a letter from a friend and this is his advice.

" I cannot launch at MacFarland Park, it is a horrible, short slab of concrete and one can damage one's boat and trailer there. I saw a guy pull out on Saturday, his trailer wheels were over the edge of the ramp and when he pulled out he hit the gas hard, bounced the trailer out and almost threw his boat off the trailer. Not for me. "

The launch pad over at the Glenora Ferry (east shore) looked good the other day, we've had the cold weather, I wouldn't want to comment on it now, but it would be an alternative to McFarlenes'.

I'm afraid she may be over - if we get some WARM weather - who knows.

Thanx for the other alternative ramp ,it can be very tricky at mcfarland's
especially at night.The time we went out from mcfarlands, we meet another boat that came out of shermans point ,is this still open????? Still have my finger x for one last chance !!!!!! Hey what can i say, im a fisherman.

I'm sure there is ice in picton bay. It sounds like Mcfarlands may be rough!
Al-the conservation ramp is directly across from the cement plant about 3 KM from picton harbour towards the ferry. It's easy to miss it keep close watch.
I would not suggest the sherman's point ramp unless you have 4 wheel drive at a minimum. I tried it last year late with just some light snow. I was all over the place with my truck.
I checked out the picton ferry ramp at 4pm today. The loose ice from the bay area has moved in. From shore there is about 50 feet of ice chunks of various size. The ferry keeps the ice from becoming one giant mass but launching wouldn't be easy.
I still want to get out so i checked out the launch ramp at Finkles shore park. It's located at the edge of the town of bath. This is about 25km from the Picton ferry. There is NO ice here. There is some light snow on the ramp but should be very easy to clear. It's a long run to the picton area so i will try out in front of the lennox generating station. I'll be trying out front where the warmer water flows out from the generating process. The location of the plant from Finkles is about 5km. Today with a west wind there was hardly a ripple on the water. Tomorrows forecast is the same as today with a high of -2 degrees predicted.
I'll send a report when i return.
REMEMBER- bring ice melter/salt and a shovel 'cause you never know!!!

Unfortunately i could not get out today. Called in to work for a late shift. I will try again Sunday. Saturday forecast is for SW winds 35km! This may push more ice towards the ferry ramp. The ferry ramp is east side of ferry crossing right beside the washrooms.
Sunday - 10km winds from the north.
Unless hell freezes over i will be out fishing sunday at Finkles.
Merlands should be available there's just no shelter from the winds and the dock has been removed for the season....Larry
