Quinte Fishing

On Thursday, a bud and I headed out to Picton and headed out from Merland Park. We headed out in some whitecaps to the Ferry area. Once we were near the Ferry dock the waves were minimal The water temperature was 38 degrees.
We used planner boards and although the boards were new to us we were able to land an eight pound male walleye. We released the fish. It was caught in 67 feet of water around the ferry.
Once we finished fishing, we returned to Merland and were disappointed to see a large garbage can full of 8 plus pounders skeletons. I guess the fisherman don't realize that these are the breeders and the fish are loaded with carcinogens.
The sonar was showing quite a few fish and loads of baitfish. Other boaters did better than us.

Thanks for the info on those portable sonar batteries. I went out and picked up a new one and had ten hours of juice.
Thanks to all for giving me the tools and knowledge to head out there and catch my biggest eye.

Too bad about the big carcasses, I think most people these days throw the bigguns' back.

You saw the remnants, I was at that dock late Wednesday afternoon when the four or five guys came in with 14 fish and displayed them out by the fish hut. At least 7 or 8 were over 8 pounds and included two or three 10 pounders and a 12 pounder. It was disgraceful that in this day and age that people would keep that many fish of that size, I had thought those days were gone.

Why not take photos then report them? Limit is 1 fish over 26 inch per person on a sport license. If they were within the limits then there is nothing to whine about.

I don't whine, it was a comment. You are right though, I probably should have taken a picture and reported it but I wasn't aware of the 26" limit, I don't keep anything over 5 or 6 pounds, so its not something that I thought of. Considering that they had been dropped off by a guide I assumed that as disgraceful as it was they were within the law. I guess you should have been there, maybe you would have done something, but then again given the type of comment you made, probably not.

please post accurate fishing regulations.

Hey rogerH. We were out in a 14' tinner Wednesday as well. We picked our fish up in the same spot right around the ferry. 4 color core worked well!
Cinderblockcyclops, all of this is hearsay filtered through 3-4 guys that posted on the Internet they seen a barrel of filleted fish. You have no proof that there is a slaughter takeing place right now, and if you did you should be calling the tips line not babbling on here. We had 3 fish on wednesday, 1 weighed 6.5lbs and the other was 6 lbs. both of these fish were a inch or 2 under the 24.8 1 fish limit. That being said those guys could of had 15-7lbers and there 5 over 24.8"s and still b legal. I assume u have written letters to mnr and called the tips line to voice your concerns?? I also am assumeinf you have enrolled in the walleye anglers diary, and also have sat in some fmz zone 20 meetings to let everyone know there is a slaughter takeing place?? If your bitching about the mnr i really hope you have enrolled and done your part!!!! I believe any guide dropping these guys off would be absolute certain they are within there legal limits, as the fishery is there livelyhood. If you wanna speculate and go on a RANT do it on your own post! I am just 1 of the thousands of guys that only get to quinte a few times a yr. and now I don't post much because you get guys like you that think they run the waterways and asking if we released the trophy's we post.
The MNR has regulations in place and for the most part I believe the majority follows the rules. I have seen the MNR numerous times in the only few times I make it there. I seen them launching at macfarlands not to long ago. And what's wrong with slapping a measuring stick to a fish???? I'm pretty sure almost everyone has the long sticker measuring tape stuck in there boat.

Limit is 1 fish over 26 inch per person on a sport license?

I thought the limit is 1 walleye over 24.8 (not 26) inch per person (either on a sport or conservation license)

I never have been an internet post type person, I come on this site because I like fishing the Bay of Quinte and enjoy the posts because for the most part they are put on by anglers who enjoy fishing the BOQ, respect the fishery and want to see it thrive for future generations. I should have been aware of the regulation for size limit but wasn't, I am now, and want to assure the few posters with negative comments that I am doing something about it.
I have caught my share of walleye in the bay but keep very few, only a couple now and then for the table and never keep the large ones. Those of us who enjoy fishing understand that large fish, especially the females, need to go back to maintain the fishery. I know that misconceptions can occur in texts and posts and sometimes things are taken the wrong way, I truly hope this is the case with a couple of you, but the impression I get from some posters is very negative, something hard to understand. I posted to share my observations and concerns with fellow anglers, not to be chastised for not taking pictures, etc., and then have the suggestion put to me that I didn't really see what I did, that they could have all been seven pounders?
I caught a 13, 8 and 7 pounder that day ( all went back) and have caught my share of large walleye in the past so I know about size ranges. There were not, as has been suggested, 15 seven pounders. There is no doubt about what I saw ( I was not the only one who saw ), and have never seen before on the Bay by the way, it was absolutely disgraceful and I believe now, outside the law. There were four men and one woman, I believe from outside the province, on the dock that day and the fish were displayed by the fish hut, smallest to largest, and most were large, while they took pictures.
The boat, I am told was a charter, and is not one of the regulars that I have seen, but is very recognizable and distinct. I also saw it the previous weekend in Picton Harbour. It may even be a charter boat from outside the area.
I am providing all the details to the MNR.
I have educated myself for the future and am taking action, but I have to say something, how can someone even suggest that even if the fish were all seven pounders and technically legal, that keeping 15 would be okay. These fish were caught for sport, by people from out of province who could afford a charter not by people who need to feed their families.
That statement indicates to me that despite all the education about catch, release, conservation and preservation of our fisheries, there are still a lot of folks out there who just don't get it.

How do you know which ones are female without cutting them open.
