Looking to buy a new spud. Just for walking and testing ice, not for making holes. Are you guys using the heavier 10-12 pounders, or the light 5 pounders?
Obviously the heavier spud will bust through faster, but is it necessary just for walking/testing??

Thanks!!

I like the light ones for when I send them through the ice. Improves my chances of spearing one on the way to the bottom

i have a home made 10lbs one made from a tamper handle and a wedge used for cutting down trees(sharpened) with a wood bolt welded on it and screwed into handle no effort to test the ice lift and drop.

Over the years of selling the Frabill Spuds, The lighter one is the one that most guys want for walking with. I would make sure that you add a rope to it and put it around your wrist. This model has the serrated cutting edge. Cutting ice is very easy.

Spearing threw the ice gets expensive.

I have had the heavier ones in the past, but now use the frabill Stacy showed. Much lighter to carry and can still cut a hole in 6 inches of ice without too much effort. Thicker ice than that and the auger gets fired up.
