For those of you who would like to "guess" the ice thickness, here is a simple spreadsheet table. I apologize for the English units, (temperature is degrees F and ice thickness is inches) but I am from the US, so there you go. If you want to setup your own calculations, this is taken from: http://lakeice.squarespace.com/ice-growth

You can also use the attached chart from that same reference to predict ice thickness using metric units. Note that it is important to start at the current ice thickness if there is existing ice.

Some notes of caution. This is semi-theoretical and does NOT include all possible factors (like wind, current, etc.). Do not assume this will work for you. Always check the ice, take safety equipment, go with a friend, etc. Also, this chart assumes you start with a very thin layer of ice. It will NOT work with open water unless it is completely still and already at 32F. There are more complexities to this calculation that I won't go into here.

I'd suggest there are a lot of other variables that are not included here such as amount of current, wind affect, size and depth of waterbody etc. In other words Lake Ontario does freeze over at the same rate as a small shallow back lake.

I resemble that remark but went ahead and checked ice behind filtration plant at bayside............. about 3 inchs just off shore in shallows. Went a little further checking as we went. Didn go far before spudding thru in about 3 wacks with spud. Quickly made way back to shore...............will give it another day or two..............No fish worth drowning over!!

Note that these predictions are only useful if you have ice started. Snow on top WILL insulate the ice and retard the growth rate of additional ice (that's why I am always suspicious of areas with drifted snow). Current under the ice will do the same (watch out for narrows and other high current areas). Expect by this weekend it will all be academic as ice will be thick enough in many places to go.
