Well I've long read these forums but I figured it was about time I contribute to it. I'm Chris from Toronto and I'm crazy addicted to ice fishing quinte. I became hooked last year when I landed my first pig and I have been thinking about it for many months. I'm days away from my first trip of the year and I'm starting to lose my mind... When I'm not daydreaming about quinte gold.. I'm reading and rereading this forum. Hopefully I'll have some fish to post a report about soon.

Now.. I always get a little worried about quinte ice because I rarely fish water with currents and so I'm always overly cautious - any signs of danger or bad ice and I'm not risking it. Problem is its a long way to drive to be turned away by dangerous conditions so I'm really hoping to get some updates and advice before I make my first trip for the year.

I'm planning on hitting up wagers on Monday... What is the current status of the ice? How far out is safe? (My "spot" is about 300 yards out). I've read that there's a solid 4-6" of black ice but I'd like to be sure before going.

Regardless, I'm looking forward to another great year on quinte. Feel free to visit me in my Eskimo 3 man and say hi. I always bring my camping grill out with some hotdogs and stuff and I'm happy to share.

Cheers!

Great first post and as you know you are screwed. Once you catch a big ole pig, dreams of catching the the next one will haunt you in your sleep and when you're awake. Welcome aboard. I would luv to be able to tell you its safe but i havent been out at wagers on the ice yet. I hope somebody comes along soon and gives you a report but that said potters creek has good ice and at least you will be able to wet a line till you hear of conditions at wagers

Thanks for the tip, I may just head there instead. Either way I'll post a report when in home.

Cheers

Decided to update with a quick report.. Due to lack of info about big bay I changed plans and met up with some friends who are very experienced in early ice quinte. They wanted to visit a honeyhole near the narrows by trenton so I tagged along. Ice was 4-6" where we were and there's a nasty pressure crack with open water between the island and the buoy but we avoided it and were fine. Ended up going 3/3 with a 5 lb and 2 keeper 3lbers. Highlight of the day was definetly the aggressive marks on the flasher. Was very happy with the new flasher as well.

I ended up hearing that big island has 8-10 inche's of solid ice so it's probably good to go but don't take my word, bring a spud and check it out before you go far.

Sunset capped off a beauty day with good friends:
