The question was "if you download the avionics app" let's asume he meant the map also . Do you get charged to use it when traveling from the U.S. to Canada . If he does not have cell service in Canada ( I.e . A Canadian provider . He will have to put his phone in airplane mode to avoid roaming . At that point the navionics app stops my location update . I just tried it .
Please tell me how to access gps location on I phone without cell connection .

Putting your phone in airplane mode turns off all wireless signals so cellular (voice and data), wifi, bluetooth, and GPS will all be disabled. You will definitely lose your GPS location when you put your phone in airplane mode. However, turning "data off when roaming" disables the data connectivity when you are roaming and you will not incur any roaming fees but this allows your GPS receiver to continue working (which does not require or use data) and your Navionics app will function perfectly.

Not sure on the whole data thing but....one thing is for sure Navionics is a great app! always puts me on the spot I want to be...great for keeping your locations with notes and in trouble times will guide you home!
well worth the $15 bucks I paid.

Before I added the app, it was a bitch to find the "X" I painted on the ice! LOL

Cheers...Be safe!

Ok I tried turning roaming off . Navionics was able to continue updating my position . My concern is that ROGERS is still listed as my provider . The only way to get ROGERS to turn off is through airplane mode . When I do this Navionics stops updating my position . Now if I go across the boarder that rogers will either dissapear or turn to another provider . I believe at that point you will start additional charges on your phone . This brings us back to the beginiing of having an external GPS antenna like the Bad Elfe . That I can say 100 percent for certain will work across the boarder or in the Bahamas or across the world for that matter . I have done it and I continue to do it . And that my friends , you can take to the bank .

I'm not arguing with you that an external GPS receiver works well and certainly won't incur any data roaming fees, however I am telling you the built in GPS receiver works the same way.

Please see the previous link about data roaming to clarify your roaming concerns

If You have an external GPS receiver and it works for you then great.

But, in the interest of making sure others that read this thread have accurate information. I want to make it very clear that the Navionics app DOES NOT require data to operate. In order to use your Navionics app out of your coverage area and ensure you do not incur any data roaming charges, simply turn data off when roaming. If you also do not want to receive any texts or phone calls while roaming, turn all cellular service off when roaming. Just to be very clear the Navionics app DOES NOT require any cellular data to operate normally. It requires wifi or data to download the map sets for coverage areas. Once the maps are downloaded you DO NOT need data services to use the app for location, speed, navigation etc it uses GPS data that it receives from your GPS receiver either external or the built in internal receiver.

Wasn't trying to be a dink. Re reading my response it came across a little stronger then I intended. I wanted to make sure accurate information was portrayed.

My apologizes to you sronza if you found my response as an attack. It was not my intent.

I found this on the Navionics webpage:
Cell/wifi and without signal:
To access some features of the Navionics Mobile apps, you will require a WiFi signal or cellular coverage.
1. SYNC MY DATA
2. Magazines & Guides
3. Weather (not including Tides & Currents)
4. Satellite and Terrain overlay
5. Sharing info – Facebook/Twitter
6. Downloading new map areas (government charts, Navionics Nautical charts and Navionics SonarCharts)

When offline (no WiFi or Cellular coverage) you will be able to access;
1. Previously downloaded map areas (government charts, Navionics Nautical Charts & Navionics SonarCharts) including the mapping details such as Tides & Currents, marina details and Community Edits within the downloaded mapping
2. GPS position (dependent upon if your device has a physical GPS chip)
3. Previously downloaded Magazines & Guides
4. Saved Tracks, Markers, Routes, photos

A very useful link:

For those that doesn't have the cell capability you can add this device:

No apology needed I'm not offended . Just trying to make sure I get the best out my electronics to . I will continue to explore the functions in the articles provided . I should say that I fish Lake Erie in the summer (on the international line) and travel the US often with my electronics . I'm used to seeing the message " you are now roaming " (I phone 6 ) . Also after purchasing "travel packs" then still being charged extra fees . This prompted me to use an external antenna . No problems since .
One of your articles did say that reliability can be an issue when using Just iphone with server off ?
I believe that this might be the source of issues I'm experiencing .
