hows the night bite been???? i havent been up this year but i remember last year was weird, i kept getting my best catches during midday and even when there was blue bird skies, in the past i found the night o be better, just wondering if the day bite has been out producing the night bite again???? if so have the fish been coming in shallower in the night as they have in the past??
thanks Taro

Night bite may not be so bad! At least there's less boats to contend with!

Day bite seems to have slowed some, although some are being caught. A quick gander at some of the recent posts should give you an idea.

I don't get it.

Ten or fifteen years ago, it was next to impossible to catch fish in the daytime. You had to wait til after dark. On November 18, 1999 I caught 19 walleyes fishing solo at night just outside of Picton Bay. They averaged well above ten pounds. A few years previously my dad and I caught 39 walleyes at night inside Picton Harbour. We just couldn't catch #40, though!

Nowadays, it seems you catch more in the daytime.

Why is this? Thoughts?

I used to put in alot of time on the night shift. The fishing was hot with the most memorable night landing 30 plus fish in 5 hours. All out front of Merlands and right into the harbor. I dont know why it changes but with alot of the daytime bite coming from aldophustown and beyond it would be interesting to give that area a go at night.

My take on it is that since the advent of the zebra mussels the water has cleared substantially, walleye have increasingly suspended to feed and they are less sensitive to light. They have simply adapted to their environment. In fact I think they are increasingly becoming sight feeders and daytime is better. Basically the same evolution as the smallmouth in Lakes Erie and St Clair.
A very small sample but on the past weekend an acquaintance fished all Friday night with no luck and Saturday we caught the majority of our fish from 12 noon til 2 PM.

I wonder if you looked at cloud, light cover relating to the daytime bite, if one would have any corelation. I remain of the belief that walleye are stimulated by a gradual change in the light conditions, with more empahsis on lower light situations. This ties in with depth and some of the unique oportunities that are now available.

Just a thought from some local schmo that is working far away from home.....lol. Thankfully I get to come back home for Christmas and likley again in the summer.

Don Stokes

The times they go on the bite are very similar to the times you take salmon and trout in the big lake, from which most of these eyes are traveling from. The water clarity is different once you get east of the ferry. I like sunrise,mid-day,and late day in that order.

we did ok two weekends ago fishing nighttime.

we started at 9pm, and went till 2am....

we started by running shallow divers, but couldn't buy a bite. so we switched to the old faithful lures, and still couldn't get a hit.

we then put a 2 ounce sinker on an already deep diving lure (so putting our baits around 50ft) and we hit a few....

so, even though it was around midnight, they still were deeper than 40 feet.

and yes, we always had a shallow diver out....all night.

it didn't see a fish. :?

Maybe thats the answer. The fish are still feeding deeper in the night while i estimate that 90% of the anglers are fishing shallower and using shallow running baits, something new to try next time im out! Thanks.

That's quite an amazing turnaround, then, eh? Fishing 50' down at night? Holy.

And the shallow diver didn't get a hit?

Amazing. The times they have a-changed.
