GOLDEN STAR 2ND ANNUAL WALLEYE FISHING DERBY

We are happy to announce the 2nd annual Golden Star ice fishing derby that will take place on February 21, 2015. The weigh in will be at the Golden Star Restaurant in Amherstview between 1pm to 6pm sharp (no fish will be weighed after 6pm). $10 per ticket


All proceeds go to the Lennox and addington seniors outreach services (L&ASOS)

L&ASOS is a volunteer-based organization that provides services to seniors enabling them to stay in their own homes. Programs such as meals on wheels, transportation to medical appointments. Adult day car for those who suffer from Alzheimer's dementia. Stroke, etc., in-home caregiver relief and foot care services help keep seniors where they want to be...in their own home.

L&ASOS depends on the generosity of the community to help in these various programs.

Tournament rules:

1. Weigh in from 1pm-6pm . NO FISH WILL BE WEIGHED AFTER 6PM SHARP

2. Hidden weight to be determined by the organizing committee durning weigh in.

3. Organizers will make final decisions

4. Raffles will be done randomly.

Thank you for helping to support the seniors in our community.

Prizes will be determined.

What's the max weight. I hope it's not large trophy fish being slaughtered for this. Sounds like a great cause and event.

Should be a 5-6lb Max and hidden weight. That way the big girls won't be harvested needlessly

I've seen the ads and flyers at my favourite pizza place in Amherstview.

It's dissapointing to see that you are rewarding the 3 biggest fish caught (and killed). I realize there is also a blind weight draw prize but similar to Bob's comment this should be published accordingly. You don't list this in your flyer.

Pro Tackle runs a great derby where you can only weigh 2-6lb fish in, this year the top prize went to a 2.5lb fish. They offer a big fish fry afterwards, nothing wrong with that at all.

Donating money to worthy causes, shouldn't involve the needless waste of our natural resources.

I will not be participating in this event based on its current format.

Just my 2 cents from an avid hunter and fisherman that loves the Bay of Quinte....

great cause but I could never support a tournement that supports giveing prizes to the biggest dead fish, to many big females will be slaughterd

Well I'm gonna be the first to say it !
If all you people think that the walleye you catch and call your buddies over to witness a length and weight of a fish in -20 weather then take 5 or 6 pictures will live and swim away for another bite then you need a reality check !
Come on folks
Most people only get a few days a year to enjoy the bay of quinte and it's fishing so if they choose to keep a fish which the ministry of natural resources allow on their possession limit to weigh in for a 1 time year derby to support the elderly then I'm in !
Use your heads folks.

... LOL I heard the board had gone downhill since the good old days when I use to frequent it, so I had to come check it out ... And it didn't disappoint Hello to all my old buddies from the good ol days!

On a serious note though, are you guys SERIOUSLY berating a good cause for elder citizens because you think a few big fish kept for a weigh-in is going to affect our fishery.

Whether someone chooses to keep a fish within their limits is up to them. Big fish are kept DAILY and our fishery hasn't declined and isn't declining. Hence why limits are in place.

Guides are a good example to use, I'm sure every guide encourages and educates their guest on catch and release. However, at the end of the day whether that client wants to take his 1 over limit home with him or not is up to him. And TRUST me, ALOT of people take their 1 over home, so why not just stop in on your way home and get it weighed at a chance to help the seniors enough said

QuintePrince your argument is flawed and so are the rules of this joke of a tournament. Just make a range for the hidden weight and keep it low enough to encourage release of the larger fish, very simple. Like BigMac said.

I don't think there is anything wrong with someone keeping a fish within the mnr regs. I personally don't keep anything bigger than 7lbs unless the fish dies. All this said, I do find it to be in poor ethics to encourage the kill large of walleye for no reason. You can argue that our fishery hasnt declined, which I believe to be true, but you could also argue it's because these tournaments don't happen very often.

To be clear, I think it's a great cause as stated above. Just wish it was a hidden weight and not biggest fish.

Quinte princess, Your just a fool! If you think culling of big fish is good for the fishery u should put your head down a ice hole and then give your head a shake to dry off! Why would you kill a big mama fish??? Just for te simple fact that u might win a hat or a remote control dinky car at the prize table??? I deal with a mother and grandmother that have dementia and Alzheimer's. Do I need to go and support a tournement that's raising funds for it absolutely not. Those charities call the house enough times and there are numerous other ways to donate to these charities without takeing large fish.

It's a shame that some places still run a tournament in this format, but all you can do now that they have sold tickets for this years event is educate and hope they change the format for next year. Luckys plus has the same tournement format in place for there tournement this coming weekend. I emailed them about my concern of the waste of big fish for the shot at a couple prizes. And they told me immediately they would be changeing the tournement format for next yr.

There just seems to be more of these tournaments each year, promoting keeping big fish (summer and winter). So if there continues to be more, our fisheries will be affected.

Pro Tackle's ice fishing tournament is a great example how money can be raised and the big fish can be released.

why was a post removed??? Fish and golf pro great points!!!! I guess poachers always have the same logic about the fishery! Just keep rapeing and pileging!!!! And if you ever see guys running to many lines you just steer your boat towards them and screw up there troll, they will have to reel them in!

That reminds me of a time when I was younger. There was a cop is southern ontario whom I really disliked. He was always out fishin Lake Huron where I was and running way to many lines. I pulled my jacket and hoody up over my head and Barried my cannon balls right to the floor and went straight accross his stern and took every lure he had in the water, and just kept on trolling.
