Hey all;

Hope everyone is having an awesome season...

I have a question about what skis to use to build a smitty sled...which would be better, X-country (thinner less resistance in snow) or downhill skis (wider more stability)...or is it just a matter of preference...

Thanks in advance and be safe

Here the latest one I made, skis don`t reall mater much... just keep the sled light, the brackets that hold the skis to the dec are deck or fence galvanized bracketsImage

I built one very similar to this one Gone Fishin posted. I don't take mine apart though, I just leave it together in the back of my truck with my sled on top. If I don't use the Smitty on certain days, it just stays in the truck. I used longer skis and spread the wood apart a bit (front to back) to support the full length of the sled, but same thing really. I don't think wider skis would help for stability, as the sled is wide enough on its own, and thinner skis would be less resistance for pulling. I just sit my sled right on top, and leave it. Maybe if you're travelling through the bush, you may want to strap it down, but I have never had a problem with it falling off.

Downhills are the way to go. My friend built one with the skinny ski's and it didn't pull right.

Here's mine..........just completed a few weeks ago and tested in 10 inches of snow.

Worked great!

I can set it up and break it down in about 20 seconds.

Good luck with your build! :)

If you are in kingston, Bibles for missionaries (old bonanza resturant building) next to uhaul on upper princess st have a couple pair of downhill skis for under $20. Value village also have some but are around $30 to $35. Dont use cross country they are textured on the bottom to help you push with your legs.

Bibles for Missions in Trenton also carries used skis. I bought a set of down hill skis for $5.00.

If it performs on the ice and snow on the Bay like it did here in the yard I will be happy.

Made it 40'" w X 36" from cross-brace to cross-brace this lets me use it for both the Commando and the Shuttle. The 40" Wide will let it travel or follow ATV trails.

I plan on building one of these too...I got downhill skis. I will be putting it together before the weekend.

@FryFlier - any reason you attached your rope through the ski tips to the riser piece?

Hoping to keep the ski from breaking if by chance it hits a hole or crack or drop. I think this will spread the weight and shock out and keep the main load on the sled itself. My thoughts and only a thought. I do have another two sets of old skis if they get broken.

I just built one yesterday.

$10 for the skis at Salvation Army. $16 for wood bolts and Eye Hooks from Home Depot.
Used 2x8 and 2x4.

Took about an hour and a half to build it.

Plan on checking it out Fri, Sat and Sun. If I don't freeze to death first. LOL
