If the fishery is managed properly taking a few big fig during these small tournaments will never affect the walleye population in Quinte, I fished tournament on Lake Erie in Ohio where every fish was harvested. They never wanted fish to catch a disease in a boats live well and jeopardize the rest of the population. Lake Erie is still heathy and fishing continues. The few fish harvested at a small tournament doesn't compare to what the boaters and charter captains pull from the water. It's a very healthy fishery. Enjoy it and when you fish for fun throw the big ones back. If not keep them alive, weigh them in and release them after you cash your cheque. In cold water they will stay alive for hours. Enjoy them and take the prize home when you catch the big one. And let it swim another day if that's your choice.

your completly right " if the fishery is managed properly" promoting derbies that kill trophy fish for few hundred $$$ is not managing your fishery properly. The correct method is what more derbies are doing, promoting release of the larger trophy fish and using a mystery weight to determine the winner. These big trophy Walleye are vulnerable at this time of year because they are coming into there spawning area to produce more trophy fish, why kill the stock that we depend on to produce the trophy Walleye fishery Quinte is. If you want to eat a walleye take an eating size fish, if you want a trophy Walleye fishery release the trophy fish so they can continue the process. If you want to have a fun derby for few $$$$$$$ go the mystery weight way, makes it fun for everyone and you also promote the protection of the trophy fishery.

I agree. Taking a few fish won't hurt. Good job boys on raising money for a good cause.

why have a derby at all why not just pay $10 or $20 or $50 and let them draw winners from a hat lol oh wait that's a lottery not a derby. often a big fish caught is luck not skill so the draw to win is luck not skill so why kill ANY fish period??? old school thought is takes skill to catch big fish and very often it does until some lucky SOB comes in with a wall hanger and says this is my first fishing trip this year lol
what I wonder is why is it justifiable for a guide to allow clients take big fish home by big numbers some guides are on the water every day soft water then hard water even thou they might not like to see a big girl go in the trunk of a car they cant say much since they were paid by someone to take them out and help them catch big fish............... the only way I can see this issue resolved is to bring back a nothing over 18 slot. problem solved

There are these things in place called harvest quotas. This is all factored into the regulations. They due do some research at the Mnr and it's all taken into account. Know matter how much you might wanna believe but They actually just don't pull numbers outta thin air. If you have a bit of jealousy towards a guide that they can go catch all the fish he/she wants, then by all means go be a guide! It costs an estimated 75,000 dollars to start a charter business on the Great Lakes (boat, gear, licensing, fuel, maintenance and storage fees) then an additional 15-20grand a year after that maintaining (mooring fees, insurance, maintenance, fuel, gear etc.

It's not rocket science to figure out that the single most important thing to a successful walleye fishery depends on a good Spawn, is this not correct???? There r numerous other factors that come into play (wind, weather, currents, forage) that can effect a Spawn, But the single most important thing is the SPAWN!!!!!!!!!???? NO????? So on a weekly basis there are guys weighing in big females with 2-3 lbs of eggs in her do you not think that will effect anything???

If people continue to take the single most important thing away, all for the sake of a couple bucks at a tourney then you won't have the trophy fishery you have today and that is pretty low in my eyes. That's gluttony!!! These will also be the same guys that are screaming bloody murder, torches in hand screaming at the MNR wondering why there are low fish populations!!! But the MNR dictates that your allowed to so go ahead! I personally believe that the 1 over 24.5 rule is so anglers have the opportunity to put a fish on the wall. And that is the exact reason why people flock to quinte every year is because they have that option! Everyone is entitled to an opinion and that is mine!

Look what happened on Lake Erie through the 80's and 90's do to the exploitation of the fishery.
Also if you had it your way with nothing over 18 rule you would have allot of unhappy business owners that depend on out of towers to sustain there businesses. If you do not have the trophy fishery that you have then people lose interest and would not come and support your local economy.

First off great post pk lots of great info if anything from this post the info I've read is great
But couple things the 18 and under rule would just be nuts if you want that come fish the kawarthas lol !

That is why I come to quinte to be honest is to target Trophy walleye its one of the best around and to be honest I'm sure if you did a poll most people I know that want to fish quinte are looking for the trophy walleye catch and release of course !

I'm not sure but to me someone has a grudge on some guides ! I have been with a few and I tell you one thing first hand is there all very professional and knowledgable ! You say guides can keep what they want well keep in mind it's not the guide keeping the fish at the end of the day it's the angler
All a guide can do is ensure that the legal limit is followed and suggest what to do !

And one last note grizz and anyone else interested in fishing under 18 inch eyes send me a pm come spring and we can hit some lakes up my way see how you like it

lol. welp. you two guys missed it completely I know many guides first hand by name face to face. I hold no grudge to any one of them in fact I think they are great guys the list of guys is more than 20 so GIVE ME A BREAK ! No where did I say its bad to be a guide ...... I said there is a difference between a Stakeholder (Guide) and just a guy who fishes.
Stakeholder....... they will always see something differently because they make a living off the fish weather that is a guide , a tackle shop, a hotel owner, . what makes you think any one of us want to see a walleye population crash????? trust me Not one guy who reads a fishing board wants to see a population crash.
......Lets break this down a little bit............... on quinte lets say November..........20 guide boats .... 2 guys on a charter (Just to lessen the numbers )....... A hot day that's 40 double digit fish 30 days in November . 1200 fish.
do you honestly think a derby of 50 guys will all bring in a double digit fish to enter on one day? .......... do you think there will be 20 big fish derbies in a season ? .....

Hahaha if you think quinte is the only place I fish you are very wrong I grew up where an 18 inch walleye was a wall hanger lmao would win a big fish derby lol PBGUY you ever take a double digit fish while on a charter? I have taken 2 in my life and it was because they would not make the trip back to the deep. bad hook ups really suck !

Who's this spider guy. Grizz. Is he ur babysitter. Lol.

he is just some old school fisherman who lives off Sherman's point and gets to watch the freak show on the ice every day..... and apparently is in favor of total death and destruction of the BOQ walleye population. maybe because he has to spend all spring summer and fall picking up garbage from his lawn brite side is in winter its covered in snow lol
