going to merlands on 23 24 25 26 never fished this late in the season weather is supposed to get pretty cold i have a very large four stroke engine on my boat what precautions should i take i don't want to damage my engine or is it too risky can anyone with experience fishing in the cold reply please

Hey mallard1,

you'll be fine. I put some gas line anti-freeze in.

If you don't leave your boat in the water, I'd also make sure you straighten your motor out once out of the water to allow everything to drain and avoid freezing issues should a real deep freeze occur.


I've done it for years with no issues to speak of.

I have heard 4-strokes can have a hard time starting in the cold. The forecast is only calling for-2. I imagine your engine should be able to start no problem. A good long warm up and you should be fine.

Everyone should remember to turn over your motor, 4 or 2 stroke after you pull out your boat.
Drain all water from the motor and then turn it over.
Water will collect on the water pump impeller. If it freezes......you know the rest. Turning over the motor will eliminate this pooling of water.

my four stroke fifty yamaha started all winter long last season, fishing the Niagara River every weekend.

you'll have no problems.

lots of boats out there, but i'll keep my eye's out for ya!!!

we will be in a 19' lund prosport with a 115 'rude on the back.
