Using a snowmobile, we were planning on "run & gun" from Mass Pt., Horse Pt., Grape Island, Big Island Shoal and over to Wagers depending on our luck. After searching old forums I found Mass Pt can be tricky. Suggestions were to go west and stick to trails. When leaving Mass to go to Horse we are sticking to the shoreline. I couldn't find much info from Horse Pt to Big Island Shoal other than there might be some sketchy area between Grape Island and Big Island Shoal. Any travel advice for slush and ice conditions would be appreciated.

Can't give you exactly what you're looking for as I have never travelled that route. You are right about mass area being sketchy. Truck went through as well as a couple people walking. I went out of point Ann and tried to get over to Minnie Blakley which is opposite horse point and couldn't because of slush. There is also a pressure crack between horse point and Minnie Blakley and another one from horse point to grape.

A couple years back I almost put my quad through where you are talking about. It was a cold year with great ice everywhere. I followed shore from mass point and wanted to head to BI shoal. Didn't go so well! There is a strong current through there. I had gone out from the launch and popped a hole and found 6". Thought I was good. Well I found 2" with the quad. Luckily I had chains and I punched the throttle and pulled out of it. I walked back to the hole and sure enough there wasn't even close to enough ice for the quad. Me suggestion is, stay away from mass point with a machine. There are plenty other safer spots to park and head out with a machine. Good luck out there and stay safe!

Was out directly off Mass point on Monday afternoon. In 4 holes i drilled, there was 7-10" consistently. Looks like the 5" ice, and 3" of slush last week turned into 8" ice in the cold we had, didn't see any slush. Mind you 5" black and 3" of white ice, but good and solid. There were a few sleds that i seen burning around.

That being said, if it was me, i would stay near the shores if you have a sled until you are a distance from the point, just to be safe. That place is infamous for air pockets. Over by Minnie Blakely, i heard there was lots of slush. This is evidently where the truck went through.
