I have an aluminum, but glass is the way to go. If you like rough rides, stay with aluminum. Doesn't matter the brand, every aluminum is rough compared to glass.
I have been in lunds, Tritons, Rangers, Stratos, Smokecraft's and Crestliners. My next boat is glass! As for motors, they're all decent now a days, and each brand makes a lemon once in a while. (specially if they are on the assembly line on a Friday night.

I ran the 197 ProV GL last year and it blew me away. The ride difference between it and my 1775 ProV aluminum was VERY noticeable.

Pirate Cove Marina up in the Ottawa area can sell you that Lund with whatever motor you'd like but going to a Yamaha will certainly be pricier than a Merc or an E-tec.

Yamaha made the heads on Merc, I believe 115hp and above up until 2006, thereafter Merc produced them. I know this as a fact when I sold the boat and a Merc tech came to the house to do a diagnostic check and no Merc connections would work! I took it to a Yamaha dealer whose equipment fit perfectly and that is where they explained the whole story to me.

I have 1750 tyee and it's amazing. I use it for everything family day trips up the locks, skiing, weeks camping and touring 1000 islands, walleys fishing, casting for bass, trolling for salmon. It's a 17 footer that thinks it's a 30 ft when it gets rough. I have a 135 honda with a 9.9 kicker. I wouldn't have any other set up. I keep prob 15 rods of all lengths and reels in the boat along with most all my fishing gear other than down riggers and still have room for family stuff without taking much out. It's now 6 years old and it is as tight as the day I bought it and it's went through a lot from running wide open on a 2ft chop to weight a fish in to a 3 hour pounding from Alexaundria bay to treasure island marina on a very rough day. The Honda works AmZing and fuel mileage is amazing I am sure the Yamaha is the same. I find the mercs noises when cruising as a friend has one. One thing I would do is instead of gas kicker put an electric or at least research it more. There rail system is awesome so u never have to mount anything. If u down rig don't buy the Lund mounts though contact Cisco fishing systems and get there's. They were original the ones going to be manufacturing them but when Lund changed hands they lost deal. Way better. U get what u pay for. Also guys argue rivets vs. welded. Next time u are in An airplane note what they use.

Hi. I have a 198 starcraft with a130 evenrude etec that I use on the bay, this boat is very deep and wide and can handle anything that the bay can throw at it! Some of you have probably seen it on the bay around the old church or by ram,or Mallory bay. With this set up the boat will do 40mph with 4 people on board. It also has a 9.9 merc kicker that trolls all day on very little fuel. The etec is by far the quietest most fuel effcent motor I have ever owned and I have owned a lot of boats[most witw merc motors].If this might wet your interest I would be happy to give you more details. Guite a few guys on the bay have stopped by the boat and had nothing but good comments on its good looks and impressive size.the 198 style is about 20 feet by 104 in.If you would like to see the boat go to pickerel park web sight and click on the video on the first page, the are 3 shots of me and the boat.

Thanks guys. What's wrong with mercs. My old motor was good.

nuthin, they just didn't want to migrate into the ,150hp-250 4 stroke mid range market, when they already owned it with their 2.5 and 3.0 liter motors,so yamaha got a jump on that, nuthin wrong with any motor brand these days, the new 150 merc 4 stroke,is at the top of the heap,,it's their 2 stroke motors that merc fans love.,I'd buy a merc 115 or 150 4 stroke in a heartbeat,if that was in my interests, but price and quality wise tohatsu is the best 4 stroke on the planet.

I was told Mercs were now built by Yamaha, is this not true?

Mercury builds everything over 40 hp,they use tohatsu 4 stroke powerheads with slight mercury only, changes, on all their under 40hp 4 stroke motors only. been doing that for years, tohatsu also builds the small evinrude 4 stroke powerheads, they are the 4 stroke gurus, from day1,nissan,now defunct motors were all tohatsu,,,back when yamaha was still learning to build outboard motors,(some still think they are getting closer ) mercury built their lower units and mid sections,,and used a few yamaha powerheads over the years, the 2 stroke 8 hp yamaha comes to mind,as for the mercury bigger v6 motors,,,seriously, who could build anything like those, other than merc.
