The opening weekend has held a special spot for us as it afforded the chance for three generations to get together and open the fishing season.

This year was different as we lost Bert last December. His fishing skills and knowledge will be missed.

So for the 2015 opener, two of the Three Amigos along with a friend from Calgary opened the season on Saturday AM, out by Keith Shoal. We had a moment to remember Bert and began our fishing. To remember Bert, I was wearing his last fishing hat.

The kicker started OK but was cutting out, Laker John said he could hear the gas line sucking air. Checked the rubber ring at the fuel input and it was rotten. Thank You Glenora Marina for being handy and for having the correct replacement part, The side trip cost us about 45 mins.

Our trolling efforts out there produced on LM Bass. After lunch we thought of heading back towards the cement plant, but as we arrived, the wind was blowing right straight out of Picton Bay with 2.5 foot waves. Trolling was impossible. We headed back to Hay Bay looking for shelter and found a little behind Ram IS. Trolled / Drifted to Bayview Resort with our guest Walter landing a small hammer handle pike.

That was Saturday.

Sunday, we were out and lines set at 0800 fishing the cement plant area. Your odds decrease with one line per person, BUT we persisted. Around 0900, one of the boards fired and I was into a fish. Brought the fish up to the boat and John held the net, the fish flipped as he was going for it and the Hook PULLED out - Darn!!!!!! Looked like an 8lb plus fish.

Continued the trolling with all lures running the same as the one that had the hit.

We could see plenty of fish on the graph and we persisted, the persistance paid off at 1100 as the outer board fired and I was able to bring the fish to the net.

The ice has been broken and our enthusiasm soared, hardly 15 mins later the board fired again and our guest Walter took the rod and brought the fish to the net.

It was his second biggest walleye ever - a nice 7lb 9oz fish.

With that burst of activity, we were brimming with confidence and smiles all around.

It slowed a bit but shortly the rod fired again and Laker John was into a fish, slowly to the net and finally in the bottom of the net. What a nice fish too.

The fish were caught on spinners and worms off the planer boards, it was a PINK blade??????

Called it a day at 1400 and headed back to camp. A very successful day with three nice fish.

We were happy to land some fish and think of Bert, how happy he would have been for the results.

We will think of him often during the year and the enjoyment he had on Hay Bay and the BOQ.

Stay Tuned.

David aka Superdad

Thanks for taking the time to share your opener adventure Dave!

Bert is up there smiling - proud I'm very sure.

A few beauty walleye...would have been nice to boat the one lost at the net...isn't that always the way.

Look forward to reading your adventures this year Mr Superdad.

Be well.

My hat is off to you in memoralizing a fellow angler that was so close, on the opener.
