Quinte Fishing

I moved out to Kingston from Belleville and was woundering if anyone knows anywere to icefish for walleye near kingston. I know nothing beats the bay but I am looking for somewhere close to go before work.

Any help would be great.

The closest place I could think of that has some seasonal walleye movement (not sure about ice fishing for them there) is Collins Bay. Should you choose to do this, please be careful. The ice is not nearly as safe as it was 20 years ago.

You might want to consider dropping into the MNR office in Kingston to see if they have a rough area listing. There are some lakes around Verona and no doubt others, but alas I have only fished for lakers, brookies etc. in that area myself (Desert Lk- Horseshoe Lk). All of the lakes themselves in that area, should have limited overall productivity in terms of growth..... but should equally have a nice quality fish for any that you choose to harvest. Just some ideas.

Thats a good idea Don I'll check with MNR. Maybe I will try for trout.
What depths do you concentrate on. Ive never fished for trout aside from the river when they run.

I believe that lake trout in that particular area is closed for icefishing so please check your regulations. The other lake "Horseshoe" is a priveate lake under the banner "The Bing Retreat". Brook trout have historically opened Jan 1, but again.....please check the regulations.

Generally I have found both species at various depths depending on the time of the season, ice thickness etc. A rule of thumb for brookies at least is to focus on the structure and where possble feed sources may enter. Frontenac Park north of Kingston will have additional opportunities. I hope this helps.

I'm sure we've all seen this before, but people die every year under the ice just the same, so I'm posting it anyway. Be safe people, or I may get your big spring walleye for you. I'd rather you get it yourself and share a wobbly with me than hear about you going through the ice.

Someone has gone through on L. Simcoe already.

I've never been ice fishing before, I thought that I'd be able to flyfish the moira all year, yeah right!! looks like whitewater rafting territory right now, just too scary, and to really tease me, I spotted some nice steelies in there, they are just out of reach. my wifes friend from work says he's going to take me ice fishing this year, that would be a good experience for me. I'd like to catch black crappies if I'm keeping anything, they taste great.

Just to clarify, Desert is closed during the winter for trout, along with every other lake in the area that I know. Gould years ago was really good, but cant fish there anymore either. As for walleye fishing north of kingston drop me a PM if you would like some info.

There are a number of lakes with walleyes north of Kingston. The Depot Lakes, Bob's Lake, Long Lake, Kennebec... the list goes on. For trout there are specks in a few lakes in Frontenac Park after Jan. 1. Splake is open year in Draper, Upper Rock, Dog... and a few others.
