Finally after two successful days in a row of walleye fishing in the Big Bay / narrows area, I am happy to say I have put together a consistent working pattern. Locate fresh green weeds at 6-9 feet with deep water access close by, no secret obviously. The walleye have been good healthy, frisky fighters, and there's no guessing whether you have a fish or not with aggressive hits. We have been moving from spot to spot as the bite is on for a 1/2 hour and off. This morning my buddy would have limited out within 20 min. but he lost one on the way to the boat. We have caught our share of smaller pike and thankfully only 3 small buck bass in 2 days. This part of the bay has been really tough for me (3 fish) so far this year until now! Good bye trolling for me! Three weeks till bass season, so if you catch a nice bass no pictures just put it back, and if you catch 2 move please.

I am curious why in the states does the season allow for people to fish for pre spawn and spawning bass but at least in this part of Canada it is frowned upon. Is it based on the length of time bass are able to grow due to colder and longer winters

In the southern states the spawning period can stretch over several weeks and even depending on weather , moon phase can last for 2 months. Some northern states have closed bass season during spawning and some have catch and release only. Here the spawning period is more time restricted and therefore population damage more of an issue. When the female is actually spawning she can be difficult or even impossible to catch , but the males are another thing. As known they are aggressive and protect the fry after the female has completed her task and leaves the bed. When the female first goes shallow to build the bed she is more easily catchable. I have fished the south (Georgia, Alabama, Florida and Cuba) several times during this period and both my hired guides and myself prefer to target pre or post spawn. I would be a liar if I said I have never cast at a huge southern spawner but certainly not my normal game plan.

There is a huge area in Ontario that has a year round bass season. (not a live release season either)
I think at least zones 1-8 (do double check if your going to fish them)
I bet by size this area would be close to if not more then 1/2 of ontario, very low population compared to the other half.

largemouth
& Smallmouth
Bass or any
combination
Open all year S - 6
C - 2

Fireball,
I didn't check the map to see where those regions are but I recall reading a article where there was a movement to try and close the season during spawn but the attitude was that they viewed bass as transplant or invasive species competiting with the lakes cold water species.

That is correct Dan.

Let the bass do their thing.

no need to "pike fish" while "by mistake" catching a bunch of bass.

Just wait for them to open.

If you can't wait for that, learn to fish another species.

Your already cutting half the year off if you only fish for bass.

Great info . Were you trolling with lures or worm harness :?: :) I have managed find some fish in the upper narrows but trolling warm harnesses in 19ft of water. Most fish were small but good eaters .No big bite for us , but did find they might turn on at anytime. Last Friday it was around 2 pm 8)
