North Channel Lakers

I have never fished for Lakers open water but always on the hard stuff so i thought i would give it a try. I went out Thursday evening with not a lot of high expectations that i would land some Lakers but i'm glad i went. After finding the depth i was looking for and setting the downrigger to desired depth i was only trolling for 10 mins when i noticed my rod bouncing slightly but not releasing so i grabbed it and ripped it from the release...FISH ON! My first Lake Ontario Laker! It only weighed in at about 1.5 lb but that is a good eater in my opinion. I thought it might just have been luck so i set up as i did previously and as soon as the cannonball reached depth again within 5 seconds...FISH ON!!! a little bigger this time at around 2 lbs. After trolling for 2 hours i had caught 6 and lost 1. Not bad for my first time targeting these beautiful fish. On Saturday i thought i would give it another try to see if it was beginners luck. I kept my recipe the same and after 3.5 hrs of trolling i had caught 12 and lost 2. What a great time. I will try again soon, as i marked some big fish out there. Im guessing a 10-15 lb'er may be in my future if i put enough time in.

Nicely done! Head further south if you can. Off big bar shoal and south west corner of Amherst there are Giants. Many in the 10-20lb range

Hey great work eastcoastboy. A question for walleye wisdom, I'm from Amherst, what are the typical depths these fish are in, in the areas you mentioned, and spoons seem to be the most popular way to fish for lakers correct?

They go deeper as the water warms. Fish are being caught in 30 fow right now and of course always on bottom in really deep water. Or atleast it seems that way haha

They were all caught in 95-115 fow.

The summer months always produce the smaller fish in the north channel 1-5lb range with the odd one up to 10lb. The big ones head south as the water temps rise. Nice haul you have there.

Could you share the location of the closest ramp and how many kms on water to big bar shoal?

Any idea how long the lakers hang out there?

I launch from finkles in bath. It's about 16km by water

Wellington area was not too bad. Amherst island area you had better wear a face mask. Hopefully this cold snap will knock the bugs down a bit.

No bugs at all when at the north channel on saturday. Im guessing the heavy wind gusts was a factor in that though.
