Lost another ball to the depths of a back lake. I am careful with my rigger line but seem to manage to loose a ball due to line fatigue/ kink/ bend. I am contemplating braided line rather than the stainless. Any thoughts on braid?

try adding a pair of amish outfitter downrigger snubbers to absorb some of the shock that the cable is giving you

Your local canadian tire should carry Scotty rigger snubbers. (They are Blue) As for Braid I wouldn't bother. Especially if you get out in the big lake with the fleas.

I used braid on my manual riggers and loved it but once i upgraded to cannons with the auto-stop feature, I couldn't use braid since the auto-stop feature will not work with braid. I do use a snubber now and have had no problems with the line breaking.

A friend of mine is setting up a rod and reel for laketrout with braided line its called Torpedo line it has 19 strands braided to make 1 strand,he says it gets down deeper then the stainless solid, with less line out.It is rather expensive $49.99 for 1000 ft. Also it doesn't kink like stainless.

What your talking about is still steel line , oh and it still kinks trust me ! I think these guys are talking about braided line like you use for fishing , made out of Dacron or Spectra ,etc...
