Is turn over not complete when the surface temp is 39°F or 4°C? If so, surface temps are still in the 50°F's....

Hey Rob...I'm not sure if there is an exact surface water temp when it occurs. Turnover happens at different times on different lakes according to depth of water. I know it happens twice/year on most lakes. In the spring, and in the fall. 39F seems a bit too cold though. I'm almost positive fall turnover typically happens sometime in October.

It happens on different lakes at different times because not every lake is the same depth and temperature throughout the year. It usually happens only twice a year but with temps going from one extreme to the other it could happen more than twice a year. When water reaches 39.2°F it becomes less dense, floating on top of the warmer water. The water that cools below that temp to 32°F freezes. So when I say surface temp should be around 39°F for turn over to have happened, this is why.

Turnover can happen with surface temps of 50 or 55 if the temps below the thermocline are warmer.... Surface temps do not have to drop to 39F for turnover to occur is all I'm trying to say.

With laldophus reach so deep , it holds a lot of heat and guessing takes longer to turnover

Correct and more over wind plays the biggest role in turnover not temp. Most of the back lakes in the kingston area have already turned over with the amount of wind we have had this fall. As for bigger bodies of water like lake O Iam not sure when they would turn over, i suspect it wouldnt all be at once you would have different areas mixing at different times.

But the most important thing to remember is whenever you have a bad day and cant find the fish in the Fall blame the turnover, thats what I do!

Yes, in shallower lakes the wind is a huge factor. The wind will help speed up the process by mixing the layers together. Also, the bottom layer will not be as cold in a shallower lake as it would be in deep water so it would take less time for the top layer to match the temps of the bottom layer.
It probably hasn't happened yet in Adolphus Reach, but maybe it has in the rest of the Bay...

I never said surface temp needs to be 39° for turn over to happen, I said that is when it has finished turning over. Just wanted to clarify that.

39 degrees is when water is at its maximum density but a lake can be fully turned over before it hits 39. Turn over just means all stratification is gone and there is a uniform temp. That may be at 50 degrees 40 degrees etc. because the wind also helps mix the lake up.
the 39 degree is important because if water was like most things and was at maximum density when soild (ice, 0 degree) then ice wouldnt float and lakes would freeze from the bottom up. this would make sustaining life, and more importantly icefishing, impossible.
