Newbie and Quinte

Hi guys,

I'm new to the board, and pretty new to fishing. I began last fall when I decided to buy a boat. I love challenges and decided to go after the walleye. I have been reading the board for a couple months now, and have decided to make a trip up there next weekend, staying at Merland Park in Picton.

Any tips for a first-timer on Quinte?

1) I have downriggers, dipseys, and planer boards, what would be best to use, and should I bother bringing the riggers ?
2) What is the approx depth I should be targeting ?
3) Any hot colours and/or lures ?
4) What would be a good trolling speed ?

welcome to the new addition u will have i have riggers on my boat only use um if i have too boards seem to work the best for me running big crank baits at all depths from 50 feet up i leave toke a fish at 15 feet down last time i was out dipzys work but snap weghts can work good to or lead core slow speeds work better most days but its fishing fast works too as for.colors perch seems to be hot right now but any thing works purples and oranges are my #1s good luck let use no how u do

Looks like we're coming up Monday-Wednesday.
Supposed to be some nice temps.
Hope the winds stay down.

I think I'll keep the riggers at home then.
And try some Deep Tail Dancers. I have T9's and T11's.
Hopefully they work well flat-lining.

Is the cement plant out from Picton a good starting point, and head towards and past the Ferry ?

What would be a good trolling speed for this body of water? 1.5-2 mph ?

those are good starting areas and speeds. I would also add reef runners to the list and we have done well recently with perch Matzuos. In-line planers are a mainstay for walleye fisherman, either church boards or offshore boards. Don't forget you are only allowed one rod per angler west of glenora ferry. Good luck

I do have boards, the offshore ones, but without the flags.
Have never used them.
Do I just look for erratic behavior on the board, or will I be able to tell from my rod?
Also, do I let out about the same line as flat lining, and how much out after I put the board out?

I have been running 140-160 ft behind the board. You should see the board drop back when a fish is on. Use the clicker on your reel and set the drag so it just barely holds the board, that way when a fish hits you will hear it. Most flags are just for visibility but you can get ones with the tattle-flags which drop down when you get a hit, some people mod their own boards to make their own tattle flags

Hi guys,

Just a follow-up report for those that gave me such great help and recommendations.
Unfortunately, it didn't lead to a single bite Nov 2-4.

We fished pretty much from the cement plant, out past the ferry, to Sherman's Shoal I believe it's called.
Lots of boats, tons of fish marked, but all 50' or deeper.
Passed many bait balls of minnows, and fished water from 25-75 deep.....again, once we were in 40-50 feet of water, marked a ton, but couldn't get them to go after anything. Deep Tail Dancers, Live Target Perch, and Reef Runners were mostly used. Straight lines, and planer boards.

We also tried down by the entrance to Hay Bay to switch things up.

Anyways, was still better than 3 days of work, but I guess we were a little early yet. The upper-teen temperatures sure didn't help, but couldn't ask for a better 3 days in November weather wise.

Again, thanks to all, and I hope to make it back in the spring for the opener, as the boat is now stored away.
