Does anyone know why you cannot use awlwife for bait on lake O , and lake Erie ? Just curious because as I understand these are plentiful on both lakes ?

There is a list of legal "live bait" for Ontario. Alewives are not on that list so simply can not be used as live bait. You can legally use them as cutbait. It is to avoid spreading species from one body of water to another. Kinda seems silly at first but if you think about it makes sense that there has to be some control of what species can be used alive to reduce the risk of introducing them to new bodies of water.

Like west lake willows said u are not allowed to use alewive as "Live Bait". Also like stated earlier they are not on the live Bait list, which means you are not allowed To use a net of any sort to catch them. Includeing dip nets or minnow traps. They must be caught with a pole and also u are not allow to store them in the freezer at home. Hope that helps. Cheers and happy new year.
