I never liked bats but I like them now. Anything to keep those windmills away.

Yep, keep those Coal fired and nuclear power generators cranked up. The little brown bats can cash it in the same time as the humans when the planet has finally had enough of the carbon foot print we placed on it.

Interesting decision.

A very key point was made.

Quote:
The tribunal dismissed appeals on the grounds of human health risks. It also rejected appeals on the threat to birds, although it did call the project site “poorly chosen from a migratory bird perspective.”

The panel upheld the appeal because of the risk of serious and irreversible harm to the Little Brown Bat and Blanding’s Turtle.

Now the developer has a green light to simply choose another location that is not in direct path with the bats and turtles.

If it was dismissed on the grounds of human health risks or threat to birds, that would have dramatically reduced the number of possible locations for another site.

Somewhat impossible in that neck of the woods as the Turtles are pretty much scattered throughout the South Shore. wpd will likely appeal this to divisional court because I can't see them coming up with a solution regarding the bats. mitigation strategies with the turtles are possible but how do you keep bats away?
And Hutchy, I would agree with you to keep at least the nuclear option going because we don't have the battery technology to capture and store the power these things generate. The other forms of generation have to be on standby constantly in case there is a drop in wind speed If you're a fan of wind, you're a fan of brown outs and higher bills....

I'm certainly a fan of wind, especially if it fills my sails and keeps me going. Otherwise, it's time to find a harbour and kick back in the hammock and wait. New site selections will take a while, as well as the EA approvals, postings, consultation, and so forth. Well that, and trying to find a new site. I'm not overly a fan of turbines, between their droning noises, and towering heights, its a bit of an eyesore on the landscape.

Thank god for bats. Also There should be some type of vote because the citizens that live there every day have to deal with the turbines but have no say in what happens. Just the big companies put them where there is lots of wind. People are all for solar and wind that kill more animals every year than hunters but they absolutely hate hunting and guns.

This post wins the award for the most misinformation packed into the least amount of sentences.

Curious what animals are being killed by Solar?

Wish we could harness the hot air in this thread and spin a turbine with it....and with the amount of hot air on this subject, it would be a true renewable form of energy.

Solar is not directly killing animals but it is just wrecking miles of land where many land animals need to survive

This. Those eight foot barbed-wire topped fences fragment the environment for animals. Full stop.

Not to mention how solar has had its part in the destruction of the Ontario energy sector and on the economy of the province.

Shouldn't we be more selective on what type of green energy that we use? Are these methods only a temporary solution? Why do we need all this power? Not much demand with manufacturing moving south or overseas. I might have just opened a can of worms. Lol

Ontario is selective.

Currently supporting the grid is rooftop solar, ground mount solar, wind turbine, small and mid size hydro, and finally biogas (anaerobic digestion and landfill gas recovery).

All of the options offer long term solutions (well, 20 years per contract, with options to renew for a second 20 year term).

Intention is to balance the grid with renewable forms of energy and nuclear power.

Nuclear will always be 100% required for base load generation.

HUGE amounts of money is being invested in battery storage and other form of kinetic energy storage. This way we will be able to generate green energy, store until base load requirement, all the while supplementing the grid with nuclear power.

No forms of coal energy, or soon, natural gas energy, will be required in the Ontario energy grid.

Alberta is starting up their program this spring, and Nova Scotia is starting their program this summer.

Hope this helps clarify your question.
Cheers,

They don't seem to realize that they are trashing the largest natural wonder of the world.
