Quinte Fishing

I have a friend who has a tinny and just swapped out his fishfinder. The new transducer is bigger than the old and as a result it is throwing water straight up onto the engine when he is driving the boat on plane. He is concerned as when the water gets close to freezing its going to turn the cowling and side of the engine into a great big ice cube. The transducer is installed on a thick plastic board so he can adjust easily without screwing holes into the actual boat. The question is does he have to raise or lower the transducer to eliminate the spray. Right now the spray is pretty bad.

Dan...I would think the warmth of the engine alone should be sufficient to keep ice from accumulating on the engine housing, but to your question I would think getting the transducer a little deeper in the water would work, or try adjusting the angle upwards or downwards.
Might be a trial and error thing...I know I had to play around with my new transducer to get the optimum performance but I still get a little spray regardless.

I would put a level on the bottom of the hull to the transducer. Transducer should just rest on the level. May also have to point the transducer up just a touch too.

One alternative is to remove the transducer and using the screw holes to help fasten on a fiberboard (thick cutting board works) Apply "Marine Goop" between the board and boat as a bonding agent which holds awesome but can be removed if needed.
Now he has a large area for the transducer mount.
If it is the side imaging unit he may want to mount it up a but higher to protect it and install a small transducer on the other side so it will be in the clean water path to get the bottom reading at higher speeds.

Put a bead of silicone between the boat and transducer.

He has a fibreboard on already and just trying to determine if he needs to move it up or down a bit. He did have ice forming on the cowling in the past when the spray was just much lighter. Now with the new transducer its much worse. It seems the suggestion is to move it down a bit?

Dan...if he has the fibreboard, why not try mounting a small piece of deflector tin (small piece of flashing) above the transducer. It shouldn't interfere with it's operation I wouldn't think. Just a thought.

After reading your post I would recommend you friend riaises the transducer. The transducer bottom should be level or only slightly lower than the bottom of the boat. Also, he should make sure the transducer is mounted away from any stakes on bottom of boat.

He is to low has to bring it up so bottom of transducer is even with boat, or just a hair under.

his concerns are valid.

ice will absolutely form on an outboard from spray in December.

I have the same transduser and had the same problem, I moved it up flush or just slightly above the hull and the spray went away.

I would have to say the same. A little low. I'd start with that

I had that issue with a 'Bird unit. Called them and they sent as rubber plug that fills that gap for free.
