In the past few years the disposable tanks have gone up over and over again from $14.99 to $16.99 to $17.49 and now I was shocked but not surprised to see $18.99 for 3 bottles containing about $0.75 worth of propane per bottle. You can buy a 4 pack at Costco for $14.99 but they consider them seasonal and only carry them in the summer. Myself I have a 5lb tank I try to take with me as often as I can but sometimes the extra weight is inconvenient so I purchase about 8 to 10 a year. I know you can buy the 1lb refill adaptors and refill these yourself but am not going to get into that as that is a whole different rant about the TSSA, you can just search here or google 1lb propane to get into that. These tanks are an environmental disaster, they cannot go into regular garbage or even to a metal recycling depot but have to go to a hazardous waste facility for proper disposal and unfortunately most people bury them in their garbage cans, just leave them on the ice or toss them on shore when they are done with them. If these are allowed to be sold the manufactures should be forced to create a deposit and exchange program to deal with the waste instead of municipal tax dollars being used.

Fortunately the end of all this is near and there are 2 companies (Manchester tank and flame king) that have seen this issue and have created 1lb legal in Canada refillable tanks. Unfortunately these companies are still in the process of signing distribution contracts and are not readily available. They are available online but finding a facility with the equipment to refill them is limited.

http://www.mantank.com/green/refillable.htm
https://www.propane-refill.com/ <3rd party online distributor for flame king. (google 1lb flameking tank for more info)

My reason for posting this on here is mainly to ask the question Are there any members on here who own or know someone who owns any gas stations or hardware stores in the Quinte/Kingston area? It would be great if someone started carrying these and set up a refill station locally. it would be a major win to protect the Quinte waters and environment. The flame king looks to be a much better product then the Manchester tank as they are the exact shape and size as the disposable Coleman style ones.

Maybe there is someone already set up locally to fill these, anyone have any info?

the concept is there the technology is also there yet the Canadian government as usual just does not care even when they say they care basically a huge crock of sheet........... lets say someone was to outfit a refill place...... by the time they meet the safety standards. pay someone to refill at a rate of lets say 10 bottles an hour the cost would probably be close to what you were paying 5 0r 6 years ago for a 3 pack........ safety being the biggest factor since these cans were meant to be disposable in the first place even now using a refill adapter you can buy at many stores in the states you only get a few rechargers before the tank bulges and becomes very unsafe . the adapter does not come with any instructions. and the world is full of people with no common sense. its my guess why you cant buy an adapter here in Canada and why you need a licensed gas guy to hook up a gas stove Canada just does not trust you to be smart enough to do it by yourself........ proof about being smart is when you see an empty tank laying out on the ice along with all the other garbage you see left out there and think that person has to be a real brain child.......... I have always wondered why I don't need a gas ticket to hook up my BBQ

I bought a 10lb tank and pay $8 to fill it.
I paid $40 for the tank and made my money back the first year I bought it.
A 1lb lasts about 4 hrs on my heater and I think I was paying about $5 a tank... They were getting too expensive and no good way to dispose them.
You can buy an adapter on Amazon to fill the 1lb green tanks but personally i do not like playing with things like gas or electricity lol

I have been filling the 1 lb. bottles for a few years. Grizz picked me up the adapter.
It is not something the average person should do. You can over fill and under fill the bottles very easily. Takes a couple years to figure it out.
The old style bottles I have filled numerous times and are still in use. The newer version bottles with the plastic bottoms are very thin and I have culled out many because they bulge at the seam.
A 20 lb. bottle is a little heavy hauling it out on first ice.
If anyone has any of the old steel bottom bottles I'll take all that you have.

Al

Cant find it on the Canadian site. I have a 5lb tank but this of course is a bit smaller making it even more convenient. too bad on the price, that's $51.38US

here is a link to the US.
https://www.lowes.com/pd/Worthington-Pr ... nk/3089591

Looked up a couple specifications on the tank.
The 4.25 cylinder weighs 11 Lbs empty
The 4.25 cylinder is 11.8 inches high and 9.1 inches in diameter.

My biggest pet peeve with the 1lb tanks is how hard they are to get rid of once empty!

supposedly if you shoot them the metal recycling depots will take them. Just need to have a hole in them somewhere. line them up a couple hundred feet away and have some target practice. Make sure they are empty before you start lol.

$50 st canadian tire for the 5lb tank. Stacy's is a better deal, full and tax free so someone take that first if he still has it.

Most scrap yards will not take a 20lber unless they are cut in half and the valve removed. I tried bringing one in that I had peppered with buckshot and they wouldn't accept it.

County of Simcoe All Recycling Centres - lot's of words for DUMP takes any tank - (with valves on). From the 1lbers and upwards.
What I pick up on my travels from as*holes that leave them on the ice or shore I just drop them off.

Don't understand why you do not have that facility in the Quinte area that takes them.

Hi Everyone- just out stalking the internet for posts about my Flameking refillable 1# propane cylinders. I am happy to answer any questions direct at propane.refill@gmail.com We have not been able to get a major retailer in Canada yet, but I can work with your group to get a full refill package and bulk purchase cylinders to someone in the group. With minimum one case (30 bottles) purchase, I can get Flameking to cover the US shipping. Happy to help- Brad :D
