I'm needing to replace my GPS for ice fishing as my old Lowrance ifinder H2O C bit the dust. I still have the Navionics Mapping card but it is the old standard (physically larger) size SD card and most (if not all) new model units accept only micro SD cards.

Any advice on the best or cheapest options for getting back in the game? Would prefer not to have to purchase a new GPS and Navionics again $$, so I'm hoping there's a GPS that is compatible with the old card I have or perhaps good mapping that comes pre-loaded on a garmin (is the garmin mapping comparable in detail to navionics?). Anyone with any advice, please chime in... All help is appreciated!

Check to see if your card is actually an adapter with a micro sd card in it. you may have to remove a bit of label

Game changed a few years back..
Navionics app. Yes it's not free.
But most decent, tablets have built in GPS. Couple hundred bucks and you have a 8-10" GPS unit. Use your subscription on multiple devices. Smartphone etc.

Thanks for the quick responses, guys. The data is unfortunately not on a micro SD card. I agree I'm out dated and have been without for a couple years now but last year I was still in the boat at this time so I was able to fish on. Agreed on the the app too, however my cell is provided through my employer and these app purchases are blocked in my plan - I've checked repeatedly (trust me  ) Sounds like I need a new job now too

I have an Ifinder H2O C in perfect condition and working order, I have the power cord, no map but you have that, so just plug and play. Let me know if you're interested.

The best recommendation that I can give is to purchase a Garmin handheld unit that suits your budget. You can often get a bundle that includes topo maps. A decent unit can be had for under $400.00 with the bundled maps. If you live in Kingston, I can help you out with mapping software in case you buy just the GPS, if you're interested. A good place to order from with orders usually arriving within five days is:
http://www.gpscentral.ca/

They are located in Calgary, AB and their service is excellent.

Cheapest option would be a chart, pencil and a ruler and if you want to splurge a compass. Take the chart and draw as many range lines as you can find and you probably wouldn't need the compass. Maybe not what your looking for but a whole lot cheaper.

If you already use a smartphone just get the Navionics Boatring app. Cost: $20
