With all the stores about the thickness of the ice and the scary stories about going thru the ice when it was a lot colder in years gone by, I'm getting a distinct feeling that something bad might happen because of the eagerness to fish thru the ice.

I am in complete agreement about fishing and the thrill and the final result on the table, but the stories that are being told on the board about close calls, has made me feel uneasy.

Please for everyone's sake - take a long look at the conditions and the water that you are walking on, the currents, the rain and the lack of COLD makes the BOQ a place with many unknowns.

All the people on the board do not want to read about someone going thru the ice and the worse result.

Please stay safe and really think about the value of the catch versus the result to family and kin.

The thought of trying to get fish on thin and dodgy is making me feel uneasy.

It has to get get cold for a while. There is far too much open water to think that the inner BOQ is safe to try.

The ice is going to be very sketchy now with more than a solid 24 hours of rain and starting about noon today in the County 40 mph winds for the next 24 hours.

be careful out there guys.

I've been following the ice story for a while. Planning my annual overnighter to Quinte this weekend and am coming from a few hours away.

Looking at the forecast, it's going to be reasonably cold for the next few evenings with overnight lows below -10 Thursday and Friday. How will that impact ice by mid day Saturday? I am certainly not an expert on Quinte ice - we've travelled down for an overnighter a few years in a row and that's it. We usually fish near Desoronto and Huffs - the community holes - we don't know the bay well enough to have any secret holes.

Thoughts on ice safety if the forecast holds?

I would postpone your trip for at least another week, that rain would have softened the ice up a whole lot. By Sunday the non current areas would be tightened back up ( just my opinion)

I second the statement by FishinScuba , It's open water for at least half the distance from town dock to Forester's, with whitecaps from Skyway Bridge to Deseronto Marina Spit and as far south down the reach as I can see, that's after 4+ hour of winds with another 12 hours of winds forecast.

Hey Mick, I would postpone for a week. In places the ice is breaking up very fast in this wind.
I don't think it will lock up enough by Saturday.

I'm new to the bay. i'm coming up the weekend of january 13th. i see we have a nice cold front coming in, but how does the bay typically recover from heavy rain and wind? I got shutout of 2 trips last year due to no ice so i'm hoping it doesn't happen again!
