Took the afternoon to get a first look at some popular spots and check out the ice conditions there. For what it's worth here's what I saw.
Big Island... my friend's lot is between Alliston Rd. & Sprague Rd. and I stopped there. Ice looked good at the shoreline and 2 guys with very little gear were fishing quite far (200 yds.?) offshore. Either they're nuts or the ice is good there.
County Shores... No go!
Deseronto...very sketchy.
Huff's... sketchy
Sherman's boat launch... met two veteran guys who thought about spudding out but never left shore. Very sketchy.
Old Church... I thought about chancing a walk out but don't have a spud yet. Looked iffy a short distance offshore.
In all a good trip. I now know how far these spots are from home base (Picton). I also know that these waters demand respect!!!
Hopefully I'll be out there by Sunday or Monday!
BTW where can I buy a good spud? Canadian Pneu had none.

I'm not sure what would be considered a good spud but I was looking for one last year and TSC had some heavy lining bars that I thought would work well. More like a heavy lining bar like the ones used at the railway. May be a bit heavy but unless you can make one that's the best I found, may be better options but that's what I was able to find.

Got mine last week for $30. Good solid spud and worth the investment IMO
