Nice going BigMac, good to hear someone was getting into a few. I was out there Sunday morning for the maiden trip. Searched everywhere as well from 30-90 feet. We only marked 5 fish in 65 fow but couldn't talk them into hitting. It was still great to get out anyway and blow the cobwebs out.

Superdad joined me for a day of fishing and it was very enjoyable to fish with him. We fished in depths of 25-60 and went out as far as the gap but had no takers.
It was a beauty day and just great to be out fishing in a boat.
Thanks David you are a real wealth of knowlodge I learned a lot.
Cheers Rob

Went out today tough going , 1 laker around 17 lbs in 4 hrs , didnt mark much found a little bait but the wind came up and we had to head in , I think it will take a few more days of sun to get things really going

My thanks for MuskyRob for the day on the water, yes we didn't get any fish, and the only excitement was a hit on the bottom!!!!! :( :( :(

It was a great day weatherwise and we talked about fishing a LOT.... That's what you do :D :D :D

The water in the North Channel was around 33 degs F - that's cold. We'll need some heat before May 6th.

It was nice to see a bunch of trailers at Finkles, people are anxious to get out.

Stay Tuned

It was great to be out on the water yesterday we waited all winter for it. Billy's fish didn't release from the rigger they sure don't rip like a muskie, it was just there when we were pulling lines to move. I did my usual masterful netting job of a comatose trout. I must remember to take off polarides when trying to take pictures with a cell phone. What we need to get the trout going is swarms of billions of BUGS

Yup I'd say at least 2/3 of the trout on riggers don't release for me. But I tend to set them on the tighter side so I don't get false releases.

Well. Out again today from 1145-430. 1 fish. What is happening???

Fished around grape/nut island and all the way around big bar. Tried 25-60fow and varied speeds

Water temp at gap was 36.5
Temp around nut island was 35.5 and big bar was 34-34.5

We trolled almost 10 miles today, not very good results for that long of a troll.

Used spoons off riggers and leadcore. Used 2-5 colours of lead.

First time post. We where yesterday as well and tried same places with no luck. I'm novice to the Trout fishing but have lots experience with BOA pike, bass and walleye. Have a few questions about proper speed and presention that would enable us to catch a few big lakers. any suggestions

Were you the boat by the red buoy around 430? I was running from big bar at that time and saw a boat.

It should start up in another week we need some sun to warm the bays around Nut and Grape island , Like Frank stated when the bug's start up the trout fishing gets good the trick is being there the couple of bug free days before the big hatch , Slow speeds 1.5 to 2.2 in depths where you mark them , they could be tight to the shore 6 ft or less when the sun is out to 40 ft down out on the shoals on cloudy days , spoons on riggers and cranks on boards or leadcore are the key as for color pick one and stick with it personally i like bright spoons , patience boy's it's been a cold spring :D

Here is the deal. Most salmonids spend most of there life (not all) in 39.2 F degree water. Probably 8 to 9 months. 39.2 is the densest water in the Great Lakes. If it is warmer or colder than 39.2 it will be higher in the water column. When the temps mix, most call this phenomenon a lake roll over. This is the process that is happening presently and can be accelerated by wind. The lake trout will move in and out of colder or warmer water but will prefer to locate near the 39.2. The reason for the vertical movement is to chase forage. The forage bait indexing done by the New York DEC and OMNRF over the last few decades have indicated the alewives and smelt are moving deeper and deeper in the water column to find their food sources. Their century old natural food sources have been decimated by invasive species.
A lot has changed. Back in the early 80s to mid 90s we were stocking a lot of Lake Huron strains of lake trout with bad genetics. They were very susceptible to many diseases. These early stocking strains related to warmer and shallower water. Mid 90s we started changing our approach to stocking better strains with a lot better genetics. OMNRF fish culture opted for New York's Seneca Lake strain. I believe that we are stocking up to 90% Senecas. Their behavior is much different than the Huron strains that prefer warm shallower water. Senecas prefer cold deep water.
If I was to target lake trout in the next 2 weeks, I would set up in 70 to 80 fow and drop the probe until I found 39.2 and start there and work my way out deeper. I would not set up until I found the 39.2 even if I had to go to 200 fow. Speed depends on your presentation. I prefer 1.1 to 1.5 running deep with dodgers and the New York gang trolls. These 2 presentations utilize wobble trolls and sometimes hoochies on the dodgers. Colour - bright. ( chartreuse or white/ lime green). Stack a few spoons 10 feet above these attractors. Spoons will need to be flutter types to run at these slower speeds.

If you find forage bait you are golden. Don't leave that area. Keep working it. They will turn on.

Hope this helps,
Al

P.S. If you don't own or can't find flutter spoons to run at these slower speeds, I would opt for M. C. Rockets in the 5" (regular size) if I was targeting them below 100'. Just run them clean without an attractor above your lower presentations. Rockets can be tuned to run at the slower speeds and the best glow product on the market today.

Thanks Al and Bill
great advice, Don't know if I will be able to wait. Might try again this weekend if weather nice. I appreciate the willingness to help out the less experience and hope to do the same in time.
