Ditto on Scotty recommendation. I run the 30" boom electrics, and I bought them super cheap when they went on sale on Cabela's website. Marine Outfitters in Kingston is also now a dealer. A friend of mine with a bigger boat on the west coast runs the high performance Scotty's, which are really awesome when you are working 300 FOW. (and Scotty is a Canadian company!)

I've never used one. I looked at them when I was shopping and they seemed relatively expensive. Despite being cheaper, the Scottys have been bullet proof. I'm sure Cannon would be good as well.

I know this response is a little late, but better late than never. The up on all Cannons and ONLY the high speed Scottys are the same at 250' per minute. I run 20lb sharks all the time on my Cannon's. I have buddies with the new Scotty LED lit counters, and they replace at least one a year. Why didn't you mention that?

Both downriggers are QUALITY downriggers that will get the job done. Smashing a downrigger you have no clue about is ignorant.

What you will miss with the Scotty that Cannon Digitroll 5's have is the build up and the slow down when sending/retrieving a cannonball. You have the option to put metal rod holders under the cannon downriggers as well.

Here's a whole thread on this:

http://www.thehulltruth.com/boating-for ... ggers.html

both brands seem to get the job done, and fish definitely can't tell if its a Scotty or Cannon..

Ahh I was not trying smash anything but I do have three Cannons D trolls in the shed I run 4 Custom Big jons 1100 Speed riggers with Scotty booms,
and run Scottys on a 23 ft. and connons on an 18 ft I like my Scottys best! Fastest most reliable smallest profile best quality and made in Canada.

You think the Scotty's have a small profile? I've owned them. I liked them. The counters suck. I wish i had a dollar for every boat I've been in where I had to lift the cover to see the counter. I hear the LEDs are not good. Both have their quirks. I like the big Jon's but a kid could get their finger caught in the spool and I've seen sweatshirt strings etc... I do like the flex boom. I think the cannons look the best. The lift boom is a nice option on the Scotty's until your buddy drops it.

What ever! Nope never had a problem with the counters but I use my finder to watch the depth always. On a reset I go to the counters. But do scrap the steel cable idea Scotty 300 lb braid all the way no kinks no fraying and the flees don't seem to stick as bad the braid has no hum spools way smother and is better.
