Kiwanis tourney - how a bad scale may have cost me 1st place

Just sharing so that maybe next year we see a a change. Got a nice one the 1st day. Weighed 5.2 kg on one scale and slightly higher at 11 pounds 11 ounces on another, right after being caught. Weighed in at Perfect Vue and it came up at 2 pounds. Yes, 2 pounds. Guy tinkers with the scale a bit and then it hits 6 pounds. some more tinkering and it hits 10.95. well, after being dead tired up all night and being a novice rookie and all that, I said ok and off she went back in the water. In retrospect I should have had it weighed again or taken it to another weigh station.

Anyway, it's my own fault so no one to blame, but still thought it was info. worth sharing, and a good story if nothing else. Might not have beat the 11.48 winner anyway. I still had a great time, beat the 10 pound mark finally with a PB, and have a good memory for my 1st Walleye tourney.

Geez 3 trys to maybe get a proper weight. Do they not have a calibrating weight. Just throw on a 5 pound weight and if that doesn't work, the scale needs to be replaced.

I'd sue Perfect Vue if I were you. Let the scales of justice prevail. Never mind, those scales haven't worked right for ages.

Honestly it's up to the committee to ensure all scales are equal at EVERY weigh in station. They should hang a 10 lb bowling ball in a bag off every scale. A great fish regardless and congrats

I had a similar issue a few years ago at a different tourney in Hay Bay I believe. The guy who was weighing the fish had a scale so bad that he would have been better off guessing the weights, haha. I just accepted whatever he said as it was just a small tourney anyways and I wasn't much into arguing with the fella. Having said that, anyone running a weigh station should have their scales sorted out.

I was fishing with the writer of this topic and he was very excited to fish his first walleye derby and to catch such a great fish.
I was part of the team that won the boat 5 years ago and also friends won the White River Air Fly-In which my son and I shared with them and I would like to see back on the prize board.
I ran a bass tournament series for a couple of years and the most important thing to the anglers is accurate weigh ins.
I purchased legal for retail scales and I think this Derby should have each weigh station with the same type of scales and all calibrated the same to make it a fair playing field for all anglers. These scales can be purchased for $300@ approx.
I checked my handheld scales which had weighed this egg laden female fat as a football at 11 Lbs. 11 oz.
I checked these scales against my certified scales and they were bang on so we basically got screwed out of the boat.
A derby of this magnitude needs to review its weigh in procedures.
I have been very fortunate over the years with this derby and am not knocking anyone just looking to improve the weigh in.

I agree with the calibrated scales. As a member of the quinte fishing series committee I know we send our scales in to be calibrated by Rosie's( think that's the name) and we have on hand a calibrated 5 lb weight to verify. I know it's too late to do anything but please take the time to contact the Kiwanis tournament director to share your experience and suggestions.
