Wondering if the shad have been in yet?? Planning a trip the third weekend of July and we are trying to see how things are panning out. Glad to see people are still catching some good sized walleye. Haven't heard much in here as far as the shad being around, but not really certain I've covered all of the posts lately. Thank you!!

I havent been out in a couple weeks but there were in then. While trolling I was marking massive baitfish balls that were popping up nearly everywhere.

The Alewife are in thick right now. Go anywhere on shore at night when its calm and you will see or hear them splashing around when they swirl on the surface. Was out for a night fish a couple times last week and hard to compete with those schools of bait. Every third cast I was hooking into one of them when they tried to mate with my lure.

Thanks COMIT. We do a majority of our fishing at night time, so this is very helpful in knowing The Alewives are still in. Hoping they are gone in the next 7-10 days so that bellies are empty when we arrive to try to land some nice walleye. Thanks for all of the info everyone, and keep every bit of information coming our way. We appreciate it and I will be posting updates when we are there.

Wondering if there is any change to the SHAD REPORT. Wondering if they're still in or gone?? (Hope they're gone now or VERY SOON so that the walleye are hungry for our trip in just over two weeks.

Ten days is a long ways off, the bite is still in Thompson's, Mallory and in the weeds in Hay Bay, I hope it's on when my grandson visits next week.

Was out late Friday night and they are still in thick but seemed to be thinning out a bit. Ended up catching 3 big Drum that were there chasing them around. There were dozens of the sheephead surfacing all night so it may have just been them scaring off some of the alewives. I will be out again to check in the next few days.

Awesome feedback. thanks guys. Superdad....I hope the bite is on for the grandkids as well. Nothing like using the net every few casts. And COMIT, thank you. Being more of a night person, that helps. Hope they're gone and hungry by next Thursday!! Keep the info coming.

Went out last night, caught and released 2 big sheepies and 2 LM (2 and 4lb). Shad were sparse when I got out around 10 but the the later it got the more of them showed up. Was out till around 3am and by that time they were everywhere. Lots of walleye around me as I had lights behind me and I could see the reflection of eyes flashing as they went through the lit up area. Saw one about 4lbs come up and grab a alewife from the side just below the surface. Couldn't get one to hit my line no mater what I threw at them. A few other people were out where I was and the they took home 3 LM under 3lbs each. If your planning to go at night I'd say get out just before sundown before the shad start coming in. Fish follow them but you can't compete once they get thick. I'll be out again before the 20th and will give a fresh update when I do. If you want some fun catching some sheepheads throw out a stickbait that runs just below the surface in natural colours that match the alewife. Run it slow, they seem to be lazy and hit the easy target. Got 9 in the last 2 weeks like this.

Edits are just me fixing spelling errors lol...

I leave for cottage on 30 island lake the day after you arrive so won't be near lake O waters. Send me an update on what you observe. I'll be away for 2 weeks and hope they are gone by the time I get back. Last year they were still around at that time during the second week of August, the year before they were gone.
