I am thinking about coming down your way to try for salmon the middle of August. I have a 17 ft Lund and want to know if you guys think it is safe to try the big water. I saw a post about Scotch Bonnet schoal on here that looks interesting. I am also interested in somewhere to stay that wouldn't be too long a boat ride to get out there. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Howard

Mid August is too late for salmon out of Wellington. There will be some staging outside of Wellington harbour but not enough to target imo. I'd be going port hope way.

Wellington tends to be just July for good salmon fishing.

All that said ... I fished the bonnet several times in my 17' prince craft and do it now in my 19' Starcraft. Pick your day and it's fine. You won't want to go in anything more than 15km from west/south.

I was out Monday at Wicklow (Brighton) on Monday. Fishing was good. My boat is a 16' princecraft.
