Location Tips - Trenton/Belleville

Hey guys. I've been screwing around all year trying to figure this whole fishing thing out haha. Mixed success with a few walleye or bass here and there, but lots of skunk days. I know, welcome to fishing.

I have never resorted to out right asking for a spot... But now my dad is coming down for a visit and I would really like to put him on some fish like the good old days when he would take me out as a kid.

I've stuck mostly to Trenton Bay area and in or near the main channel. I know the fish are in the weedy areas right not but I haven't quite figured out a presentation to avoid snags and I still don't know how to find the fish lol. I'm kicking my pride aside here, as I'm starting to feel frustrated with the boat purchase and the time I've put in this year. I love to fish and I don't want to feel this way haha.

If anyone can help me out, I would be extremely grateful. Presentation, location, etc. I have my boat at a slip in Trenton but I don't mind taking the occasional run to Belleville, Point Anne/Big Bay when the water is calmer, I just wouldn't know where to start when I got there!

I know the Bay of Quinte is a really good fishery, but I feel like it's a tough place to start when you're a newbie!

You're right about weed lines, spinners and worms (I particularly use my Uzick Spinner and ripple worms) People use the Lucky Strikes also (@ Cdn Tire).

I've tried spinners - the problem I have is depth control. I assume you are trolling and not casting? What do you use to keep the spinner deep? How much line do you typically let out? I have a general idea of how to do these, I just have a hard time putting it all together lol. Has anyone used those "tad poles" instead of sinkers?

The other problem I've had is using live bait. Good results with a nice long worm tail hanging off the hook but hardly ever any hook sets, they just steal it.

Lastly, I'm going to throw this out there. The act of setting the hook... I always immediately set the hook upon feeling anything. I've seen a lot of anglers reel down and then set the hook. What's the deal here? I figured with the delay you would just miss the fish but it's me who seems to prematurely set the hook, as my "bites" haven't been translating into successful hook sets.

Try a #3 meps spinner chartreuse with the black dots... take off the three prong hook and put on a J hook it helps with snags n bait stealers..Also U wanna b on the weed "edge" not right in the weeds.. Dont put to much thought into setting the hook while trolling, long as your hooks are sharp a quick jerk when u feel the bite n youll b good. Well thats my 2 cents.. hope it helps ya out a bit...

Sweet, I'll give it a shot!

What time is good for walleye also? I know they typically like low light but I've also heard of people not bothering until like 9:30 am or so?

If I wanted to plan a day primarily walleye but also a bit of bass at some point, what would be a good way to organize my day? lol, I need to sort myself out!

Tried some of the suggested rigs in Trenton, caught a sheepshead LOL. I tried in the weedy areas but I find its usually no weeds or weeds right to the surface around Trenton bay lol.

Gave up and hit up some large mouth bass casting with cranks (Rapala Dives-to flat). Got a couple nice 3lbers.

Try using a worm harness with worm and then a piece of rubber work on the end. It keeps the perch from stealing the worm and set the harness up with an 18" mono leader with a weight between your line and the leader to get you down. Troll the weed lines slow , right now green or arrange seem to be working... Good luck...

I was just jigging out front of my cottage on Adolphus Reach on Sunday about noon, landed a 20" eye on a small white tube tipped with a piece of worm, while my father landed a 22" 13lbs drum on the same bait in about 25' of water. It was great. A light NW wind and algae cover and the eyes don't seem to mind

Awesome! The largest drum I've caught was probably 7-8 lb and that put up a great fight. I can only imagine one double the size or more! I want another 20+ inch walleye!

How does the fishing change (especially around Trenton) come Sept/Oct? I will be taking some time off around early Oct.

Sounds like the walleye bite has been pretty good all year so far. Maybe try a different area other than Trenton. If you want to troll, use a worm harness and a bottom bouncer as your weight. Typically 1 ounce/10 FOW. If the weeds are too much for the bottom bouncer, try using a bullet sinker instead and adjust the weight accordingly. I personally prefer rubber worms (Gulp Alive) as it tends to keep perch away. Using live bait your line is out of the water more than it is in. If you want to cast for walleye, stay on the edge of the weedline or just inside and ripjig bucktails. Bass also love bucktails. Go on YouTube and type in "rip jigging bucktails for walleye" or something like that. There are many good videos on this. Karl Kalonka "Extreme Angler" has a few vids on there.

was at Point Anne this morning white caps by noon no walleye a few small perch

Last couple hours before dark head to the light house in bayside. Troll or cast on the inside of the island with small spinners with 3" twister tail white. Lots bass and walleye once u narrow it down. 70-100 ft from the island

if youre taking time off in October the salmon will be coming in so you may need to switch up your spots from in the rivers. as far as I know you usualy wont catch much else once the salmon aere in a river(other than trout following them)
