Today I was looking for our title document to the boat. After much research I found out that you have the option to register your pleasure craft license or register your pleasure craft. The licence is free. The registration has a fee. You only need the title document to sell the boat or if you are crossing the border. If you have a pleasure craft licence (free) your bill of sale/ receipt = your title document. In my research, I discovered that Transport Canada requires you to renew your boat licence every 10 years (still free). It involves all the steps of the original application including a pic of the side view of the boat (and rules about size etc of the pic) and scan of drivers licence or passport. The website times out so it is best to have your scans and pic ready to go before you start the process. This 10 year thing was a surprise to me. In case this is news to you, I pass it along. bayboy

Looks like the 'license' is for fun boating and the 'registry' is for commercial use.

If everyone had to re-license your boat, I think that would be general knowledge, although the third party to Transport Canada might not be willing to tell the world about license renewal every ten years.

"Renewing or updating a Pleasure Craft Licence
A Pleasure Craft Licence is valid for 10 years. At the end of that period, you must renew your licence.

If you change your name, address, or particulars of the pleasure craft after you obtain a Pleasure Craft Licence, you must update your licence.

You may renew or update a licence by regular mail or online, using the procedures outlined above at Obtaining a Pleasure Craft Licence.

You are correct Bayboy, it must be renewed every 10 yrs mine is due in 2020.

I believe that I do not know anyone who has renewed the license ever.

This summer I bought a used 14ft. boat with a 7.5 hp honda which was to under powered and had never been registered so I bought a 2017 25hp 4 stroke Merc and had it registered. This is the email I got after it was registered. Your request for a pleasure craft licence (PCL) has been reviewed and processed. Attached is a copy of your permanent pleasure craft licence . A copy of this document must be kept on board the vessel at all times.

Due to changes in the Canada Shipping Act, 2001, pleasure craft licences are now valid for ten (10) years. If there are changes to your name or particulars of your vessel or address in that time, you must update your licence.

If your boat was registered before 2010, it DOES NOT EXPIRE........

If registered in 2010, it will have to be renewed in 2020, or ten years after you registered after 2010.

I was looking at the website and couldn't figure out that there was no option to renew your Boat Licence - so I called the hot line and was advised the above info.

So if your boat was registered before 2010 - you don't have to sweat about the boat licence.

That was the same hotline that gave me the instructions I posted. I wonder what answer would come if a 3rd person phoned in...
