Hello All...tossing out a beg here for some Sled Mechanical Advise and something I can try on my own without taking it back to the same Mechanic for the 3rd time. (aside from tearing it down and parting it out)...at this point I am somewhat determined to kill the bee that is in my toque right now with this thing. After 20+ years of being away from Sleds I thought I would pick up a couple of older Skidoo Formula 500's to see if it appeals before investing in much newer ones. Yes I admit 1st mistake "older" ones but hey had to start somewhere without tipping off the Finance/War Department.
One is a 98 500 with Rave Valves, low km and runs like a champ...no issues! The other is a 97 500 Deluxe (no Rave 11,000Km) and unfortunately a Sled with all sort of demons and gremlins. Starts fine, idles fine...engages fine but once warmed up it falls on it face at higher RPM 5000+, never left us stranded (yet). It is almost as if it is flooding out...you can feather through the issue and is OK at WOT but has that one spot (half to 3/4 throttle) it just doesn't run right and is boggy as if it is choking itself! We note that it does also chew through much more gas than the 98, maybe normal not sure. Here is what has been done so far: 2 rebuilt carbs with new factory set jetting, replaced some fuel lines and a tank filter that was completely pooched, a replacement fuel pump, new coil and plugs/wires. Was told the Rotary Valve timing was out some 22% and was reset, I don't know the history of it as it was given to me but obvious to me someone had been playing with timing before I got it, not sure why. As there was nothing left of the filter inside the tank we removed it and completely cleaned it out as well as those new lines. Before all these fixes it still started and ran so obviously we still haven't found the issue.
At this point I'm stumped...thinking perhaps a seal or gasket somewhere. Any ideas on what to look at next would be most appreciated and well received.
