Quinte Fishing

Today, Laker John and myself took a ride to the county to scout the water and see what we could see.

First, we visited Hay Bay and saw that the only ice was at the east end up in the shallows at the very end. The rest is wide open.

Picked up the fishing rods and some lures and headed over to Pr. Edward County via the ferry.

No ice left:


Easy to put the boat in, the MNR were trying out their new boat, loaded at the rear with twin Hondas.

Looking west you could see the boat at the cement plant.



Lots of open water, cept Picton Bay still covered from shore to shore.

Took some back roads in the county and took a look at Point Petre and Soup Harbour, cast a lure into the surf, hooked the rocks, lost the lure and got the boots full of Lake Ontario water - hey it's kinda cold!!!

Too windy and the surf too high, so we headed over to the Outlet to see if the ice was gone. East Lake is open and so is the Outlet.

Sandbanks was the stop for lunch and a chance to see how the surf was over there. Same as before, facing the west, the surf was too high. Couldn't cast the lures into the clear water.

Headed back, a bit too early we think.

Heading back from the Ferry to Kingston, we drove the North Channel and had a look, Boat at Lafarge dock and the ice all gone.

Just have to get the right winds and the fishing there for everyone.

We'll see what next week or the week after brings for our brown and laker search.

New to to laker fishing and just wondering if you can let me know where in the area one might try. Going down a couple days early for the opener, would like to try then. Big boat and downriggers.. Thanks for any help or tips you may be able to offer. Good luck with the opener as Iknow your always there.

This information is not up to date, but Wellington used to be a nice spring location for browns and lakers fairly close to the beaches. There was a fishing store there, and if it is still the same ownership, they should be able to provide some up to date report. (was called Pickards). Just a thought..

Thanks for the replie greatly appreciated. I think I would rather stick closer to Bath as I am more familar with this area. Not asking for any great detail, but do you use spoons for the browns? Thanks again..

In the past years I have had good luck for lakers off the sand beaches out from Wellington.
I would fish in 20-30' of water with the riggers set at 12' using a jointed minnow about 100' back of the ball. I have to say though, I had better fishing when there was a fair chop on the water.
I also have had good luck fishing using the same method along the shoreline east of the Amherst ISL ferry.

I'm fishing from shore. Was out a few times on the weekend. A couple were landed but not my me. I lost a few..... they were hitting on spoons.

Did you get out this weekend?

I was out in the trent yesterday but caught nothing, which was okay, since I was really out there to practice my new sink tip fly line, works great!! now just need to find fish!! LOL
I wonder if there is anything close to shore at the beach in wellington, I might give that a try, since the bay and tribs are sanctuary next month.
