Giant crack opened up in front of Finkle boat launch this afternoon leaving several guys stranded. Fire and rescue were on site and fisherman appeared safe but unable to get back. This crack ran from Millhaven ferry all the way west to cement plant. Definitely not safe!!
Hope they all made it home okay!

There isn't a fish in the lake worth the risk.

Stay safe.
Hans.

Thanks for the report. I was heading down this morning.
Hope everyone is OK.
There was a guy coming down next weekend. I'll find his post and send him an email.
Again thanks for the report.

I was driving by when those guys were heading out, there was also a truck with atv pulling in to the parking lot don't know if he planned to head on the ice but crazy if so. There was open water all along the shore from millhaven to bath and from West of finkles all the way to the hydro plant.

Ironic part was that all they had to do is walk about 500 yards to the west and could have stepped safely on shore!
That open water ended at the shore right at the pavilion...

That was me with the ATV and truck and we were heading to Quinte to chase Gold just stopped and had a chat with a friend going out from Finkles , We were also the first ones at the ramp when it was discovered that they could not get back in safely , We checked all the way west and there was no safe ice from Millhaven to Glennora it had opened up at least 20 ft all the way , After much discussion between RJ and the parties on the ice and dark approaching it was decided that the best course of action was to involve the Fire / rescue dept , who came and performed their duties with great care , job well done .As this is something new to this area it was a great learning experience for all those involved , My hat is off to all those involved to get the guy's to shore . On a side note with the ice breaker moving up and down the North channel it gives the ice shelf room to move so be aware this could happen on either side of the channel

Shows how quickly things can change out there. We were standing on the concrete viewing platform at the pavilion during the rescue and just as the fireman were getting to the open water that entire sheet had slowly shifted to the west enough that just to the west of the platform the ice was actually touching the shore. We were all wondering why they weren't walking off there.
Would have been a great opportunity for the use of a drone.

Hats off to all involved in the operation!
