Hey, so I'm going to be restringing my line counter reels, I have bought four 300 yard spools of Berkley 10lb fireline, 900ft should be lots. I have four reels to spool (I'm not trying to start a braid vs mono topic) my question is if their is a method of knowing how much mono backing to put on my reels so the spool is full when I get the entire 300 yards spool of braid on it?? I realise that you could fill the spool backwards meaning braid first and then mono, but then I have to try and pull it all off with out making a mess and then put it back on the right way and Id have to do that for each reel.

Do it like you said spooling the first reel backwards. Then transfer from first reel to the second reel. No mess!! After you've done the first one, keep track on the linecounter of how much mono you put on and repeat using mono first to spool the other reels. You may already know this, but if you use a heavy mono, it will take a lot less line for the backing.

Also, if your reels are not all the same or have different line capacities, this might not be very accurate. But considering you have 900 feet of braid, losing 50-100 feet is probably not a big deal.

lol taking the line off of one reel and directly onto another reel is honestly something I would have never of thought of, but that's mint and will work perfect for me, thanks for the info Walleye 9, and all my reels are the identical. I have the low profile okuma coldwaters.

Tell me the exact reels you are spooling. That's crazy to spool one backwards, I have never done that. You simply figure out your line capacity on the reels. Which reels are you spooling? What lb mono do you plan to use for backing?

I'm assuming you are using size 15 coldwaters which I believe can handle 870 ft of 12lb mono. If I did my math correct, just put 500 ft of 12 lb mono on your reel, tie an Albright knot and then you put the whole spool of fireline on. Obviously before you start cranking your mono on, make sure the counter is reset and when it hits 500 ft, tie attach your fireline on and add the whole spool.

I have the 350 size low profile line counter okuma coldwaters, I have a spool of 10lb mono which is 0.32mm, and my 10lb fireline is 0.2mm

I thought spooling one reel backwards and then putting it directly onto another reel was a good idea and keeping track of the mono length with the line counter, definitely not a crazy idea, I have done the calculations but the line counter isn't nearly as accurate with an empty spool as it is with a full spool so I thought my calculations wouldn't be all that accurate.

You can do it however you would like. I would just never do it that like that. The math method has never failed me and its less screwing around and risk of messing a line up by reeling it on two different reels. Let us know you make out. I'm willing to be you end up with 450-500 feet of mono on each reel.

ten 4, will do Landshark, I appreciate your help nonetheless. Same to you Walleye 9, I think I have a game plan now. I originally planned on taking them to pro tackle to be spooled but they only go as low as 20lb braid there, or at least they did when I had my dads reels spooled there last summer.

Yeah that 20lb braid is still only an 8lb diameter which is good for your trolling applications. It leaves way more than enough braid and backing on your reel. I understand that you already bought the four spools though. I would be more likely to buy 10 lb braid for a spinning reel for jigging

with 20lb braid I think they only got just a tiny amount of backing on the reels, maybe 5 yards or something and he has the same reels as me. I went with 10lb strictly because of the precision trolling app, we'll see how it goes for this season anyways.

Here's a backing calculator.

http://www.pattayafishing.net/fishing-r ... estimator/

I used this one last week. It's easy and spot on.

I had a 100 foot tape that I laid out on the driveway to measure my backing.

I should mentioned that this works on any reel.

You may have to go online to you reel manufacturer for the specifics on your reel.
