A bis tournament is under way in the Detroit River. Here's the first day results;

NASCAK LEADS WAL-MART FLW WALLEYE TOUR EVENT ON THE DETROIT RIVER

TRENTON, Mich. (April 5, 2006) - Pro Rick Nascak of Winona, Minn., along with his partner, Charles Dahl of Burlington, Wis., caught five walleyes weighing 22 pounds, 5 ounces to lead day one of the Wal-Mart FLW Walleye Tour event on the Detroit River near Trenton, Mich., the first event of the 2006 FLW Walleye Tour season. With a $2.69 million total purse, including the no-entry-fee $675,000 Wal-Mart FLW Walleye Tour Championship on Lake Oahe near Pierre, S.D., Oct. 4-7, and television coverage on FSN (Fox Sports Net), the FLW Walleye Tour is bigger and better than ever.
With a full field of 150 pros and 150 co-anglers, anglers are competing for their share of a $503,300 purse, including as much as $100,000 for the winning pro and $18,000 for the winning co-angler.
Cold air and low water temperatures have made for a somewhat tough bite during the practice days leading up to the event, although dock talk has circulated each day about the occasional 11-pound, 12-pound and even bigger walleyes that have latched on to anglers' jigs and handline presentations. There has also been plenty of talk about a massive school of walleyes staging just out of the river in both lakes Erie and St. Clair, waiting to move into the river when the water warms just a little more.
Day one saw several of those big walleyes hauled to the scale, including an 11-pound, 11-ounce giant caught by Kannon Kares of Eaton Rapids, Mich., and Toby Wyatt of Clarkston, Wash.
Nascak and Dahl caught their walleyes while vertical jigging and slipping with the current. However, unlike many of the anglers fishing the event, Nascak was only tipping his jigs with a soft plastic lure, rather than a minnow, to get his bites. Understandably, he chose to keep the type of plastic lure to himself on day one. Their walleyes came from deeper water in the 17 to 26 foot range.
Scott Allar of Welch, Minn., along with co-angler Joe Bencze of Bellriver, Ontario, caught three walleyes weighing 20 pounds, 2 ounces to finish day one in second place. "We were jigging both minnows and plastics," Allar said. "We had one other bite, and the bites were spread out throughout the day. We caught the biggest fish first, which was about 8 pounds."
Allar fished downriver on day one, and said he plans to grind it out in the same area on day two.
Rounding out the top five pros are Troy Morris of Bismarck, N.D. (three walleyes, 16 pounds, 2 ounces); Mark Sak of Imlay City, Mich. (three walleyes, 14 pounds, 14 ounces); and Darold Swank of Pierre, S.D. (five walleyes, 14 pounds, 14 ounces).
Dahl leads the co-angler division. Pros and co-anglers fish for a combined boat weight. Rounding out the top five co-anglers are Joe Bencze of Bellriver, Ontario; Jimmy Cox of Bono, Ark.; Richard Ness of Ruthton, Minn.; and Jason Romano of Wonder Lake, Ill.
Elizabeth Park Marina in Trenton will host daily takeoffs each morning at 7. Thursday and Friday's weigh-ins will also be held at the marina beginning at 3 p.m. Saturday's weigh-in will be held at the Wal-Mart store located at 23800 Allen Road in Woodhaven, Mich., beginning at 4 p.m. The community is invited to attend daily takeoffs and weigh-ins, which are free and open to the public.

ARNOLDUSSEN LEADS WAL-MART FLW WALLEYE TOUR EVENT ON THE DETROIT RIVER

(April 6, 2006) - Johnson and Johnson pro Dean Arnoldussen of Appleton, Wis., caught a two-day catch of 10 walleyes weighing 40 pounds, 5 ounces to lead day two of the Wal-Mart FLW Walleye Tour event on the Detroit River near Trenton, Mich., the first event of the 2006 FLW Walleye Tour season. With a $2.69 million total purse, including the no-entry-fee $675,000 Wal-Mart FLW Walleye Tour Championship on Lake Oahe near Pierre, S.D., Oct. 4-7, and television coverage on FSN (Fox Sports Net), the FLW Walleye Tour is bigger and better than ever.

While the fishing was a little slow on day one, it picked up dramatically on day two, with 8-pounder after 8-pounder brought to the scale. The day's largest walleye was a 12-pound, 13-ounce giant caught by Jeff Seyka of Milford, Mich., and his co-angler, Don Monda of Brainerd, Minn.
Arnoldussen and his co-angler, Jason Shull of Wonder Lake, Ill., had several big fish as well, including a 10-pound, 6-ounce walleye that Shull hooked on a jig and minnow early in the morning.
"We pulled into our spot and had our three biggest fish in about 15 minutes," Arnoldussen said. "It was amazing. I lost one other one early, and we caught one a little later. We only had four for the longest time, and then we popped a 25-incher with about a half-hour left to go in the Trenton channel."
The day's catch bumped Shull into second place in the Co-angler Division, with a two-day catch of six walleyes weighing 34 pounds, 13 ounces.
BFGoodrich Tires pro Dustin Kjelden of Brookings, S.D., sits in second place in the Pro Division after hauling four walleyes to the scale that registered 25 pounds, 12 ounces for a two-day catch of nine walleyes weighing 39 pounds, 2 ounces. Kjelden caught his fish while polelining and jigging.
"We didn't have a fish in the boat until 12:30 or 1:00," Kjelden said. "But I figured stuff out this afternoon, and I have high hopes for tomorrow."
Rounding out the top five pros are Troy Morris of Bismarck, N.D. (seven walleyes, 37 pounds, 10 ounces); Tommy Skarlis of Dorchester, Iowa (10 walleyes, 37 pounds, 4 ounces); and Scott Steil of Richmond, Minn. (nine walleyes, 32 pounds, 10 ounces).
Julie Towle of Glencoe, Minn., leads day two in the Co-angler Division. Towle said she's been fishing Wal-Mart FLW Walleye League events for a few years, but this is her first year to step up to the FLW Walleye Tour. Towle fished with pro Nate Provost of Gulliver, Mich., on day two. They caught five walleyes weighing 31 pounds, giving Towle a two-day total of six walleyes weighing 38 pounds, 2 ounces.
Rounding out the top five co-anglers are Tim Cigany of Cleveland, Ohio (six walleyes, 34 pounds, 1 ounce); Dean Kaminski of Columbia Heights, Minn., (eight walleyes, 33 pounds, 6 ounces); and Jack Adams of Bucyrus, Ohio (nine walleyes, 32 pounds, 6 ounces).

Here's day three results- big numbers and big fish being caught.

ARNOLDUSSEN CLINGS TO LEAD AT WAL-MART FLW WALLEYE TOUR EVENT ON THE DETROIT RIVER

TRENTON, Mich. (April 7, 2006) - Johnson and Johnson pro Dean Arnoldussen of Appleton, Wis., caught a three-day total of 15 walleyes weighing 65 pounds, 11 ounces to lead day three of the Wal-Mart FLW Walleye Tour event on the Detroit River near Trenton, Mich.
With a full field of 150 pros and 150 co-anglers, anglers are competing for their share of a $503,300 purse, including as much as $100,000 for the winning pro and $18,000 for the winning co-angler.
With periods of rain and fog greeting anglers at takeoff, Arnoldussen made the run to one of his primary areas, which had cleared up enough for jigs and minnows to really produce. "I had to use my Lowrance GPS just to find my place in the fog," Arnoldussen said. "But the fog kept us hidden from other boats for the better part of three hours."
The fishing was good early on, with Arnoldussen and co-angler, George Miller of Flint, Mich., landing most of their walleyes by 11:30 a.m. Arnoldussen has been steadfast in his choice of jig and minnow all week, even when other anglers have been pulling in some giant walleyes on handlining equipment.
"There's new fish that just keep moving through the river from Lake Erie," Arnoldussen said. "I'm going to need 30 pounds or more to win it tomorrow."
Ross Grothe of Northfield, Minn., caught the heaviest limit of the event on day three, evidence to ever-improving fishing conditions as the tournament wears on. Grothe brought five walleyes to the scale that registered 39 pounds, 7 ounces to make the top-10 cut in third place with a three-day total weight of 61 pounds.
Rounding out the top five pros are Patrick Byle of Colgate, Wis. (11 walleyes, 64 pounds, 13 ounces); Paul Fallaw of McHenry, Ill. (13 walleyes, 59 pounds, 4 ounces); and Troy Morris of Bismarck, N.D. (12 walleyes, 57 pounds, 10 ounces).
Jack Adams of Bucyrus, Ohio, took a commanding lead in the Co-angler Division on day three after fishing with pro Aaron Hogland of Sycamore, Ill., who made the cut in tenth place. Together, they caught five walleyes weighing 35 pounds, giving Adams a three-day total weight of 67 pounds, 5 ounces and a lead of nearly 20 pounds.
"Aaron was an absolutely fantastic partner," Adams said. "We had a 4-pounder after about 30 seconds and a 7-pounder after about 20 minutes. All five were in the livewell by 1 or 1:30."
Rounding out the top five co-anglers are Darrell Diskey of Mt. Zion, Ohio (15 walleyes, 47 pounds, 11 ounces); Boyd Strissel of Billings, Mont. (10 walleyes, 46 pounds, 12 ounces); Justin Steinke of Birnamwood, Wis. (10 walleyes, 46 pounds, 7 ounces); and Tim Cigany of Cleveland, Ohio (11 walleyes, 46 pounds, 4 ounces).

GROTHE WINS $100,000 AT WAL-MART FLW WALLEYE TOUR EVENT ON THE DETROIT RIVER

TRENTON, Mich. (April 8, 2006) - Pro Ross Grothe of Northfield, Minn., caught a four-day total of 20 walleyes weighing 82 pounds, 2 ounces to win the Wal-Mart FLW Walleye Tour event on the Detroit River near Trenton, Mich. Grothe earned $60,000 plus a $25,000 Ranger-boat bonus and a $15,000 Yamaha-outboard bonus for a total of $100,000.
The event, which began Wednesday, launched out of Elizabeth Park in Trenton, and saw tough fishing conditions on day one. At the end of the day, pro Richard Nascak of Winona, Minn., had the lead after catching five walleyes weighing 22 pounds, 5 ounces.
Dean Arnoldussen of Appleton, Wis., carried the event on days three and four, catching his walleyes on jigs and minnows throughout the week. Arnoldussen brought in two more walleyes on the final day, giving him a four-day total of 17 walleyes for 75 pounds, 9 ounces, good for second place and a check for $42,000.
Grothe awed the crowd at the day three weigh-in after bringing in the heaviest limit of the event - 39 pounds, 7 ounces. This helped him make the top-10 cut in third place, with a three-day weight of 61 pounds.
The final day saw the Detroit River muddy up significantly, and many pros scrambled to get bites in what had been fish-producing hotspots just a day earlier. Grothe was able to find clear water at the edge of the mudline where the river bends just in front of the General Motors building near downtown Detroit.
"I knew I only needed 5 or 6 pounds to catch the leader, and we had that with the first two fish," said Grothe, who fished with co-angler Boyd Strissel of Billings, Mont., on the final day. The duo had six bites and caught six fish, culling once to end up with a final limit of five walleyes weighing 21 pounds, 2 ounces.
Strissel finished second in the co-angler division with a four-day weight of 67 pounds, 14 ounces and earned $7,000.
"It's the opportunity of a lifetime to capitalize on something like this," Grothe said. "It was a good day, picture perfect. We made several drifts and just ran around, looking for clean water. When we didn't mark fish, I just kept going."
Grothe caught his walleyes on 5/8-ounce Northland jigs tipped with Berkley Power Bait, thrown on 10-pound SpiderWire Stealth line. When asked what he planned to do with his check, Grothe replied: "My wife's a financial advisor, so I'm sure she's got plans for it."
Rounding out the top five pros are Tommy Skarlis of Dorchester, Iowa (20 walleyes, 73 pounds, 3 ounces, $25,000); Bill Ortiz of Richland Center, Wis. (18 walleyes, 69 pounds, $13,000); and Paul Fallaw of McHenry, Ill. (15 walleyes, 68 pounds, 5 ounces, $11,000).
After taking a commanding lead of nearly 20 pounds on day three, Jack Adams of Bucyrus, Ohio, won the Co-angler Division while fishing with Arnoldussen on day four, finishing up with a four-day total of 16 walleyes weighing 77 pounds, 4 ounces. Adams earned $10,000 for his win.
"This is something I've always wanted," Adams said. "I grew up fishing and watching fishing shows on TV when I was a kid." Much of Adams' success can be attributed to the 35-pound bag of walleyes he caught on day three along with pro Aaron Hogland of Sycamore, Ill., who finished in 10th place.
Rounding out the top five co-anglers are Julie Towle of Glencoe, Minn. (13 walleyes, 61 pounds, 13 ounces, $3,500); Adam Adler of Oconto Falls, Wis. (20 walleyes, 57 pounds, 13 ounces, $2,500); and Justin Steinke of Birnamwood, Wis. (12 walleyes, 55 pounds, 8 ounces, $2,200).
