I've been trying my luck with some big water trolling with dipseys.  I am trying to figure out the right line combo with my #0 dipseys.

I had been using 18 lb leadcore...which I quickly found out was a mistake. I lost one diver on a snag in about 25 FOW, then I believe I lost another on a big fish in about 50 FOW.....really frustrating...and expensive. So needless to say, the leadcore wasn't tough enough at 18 lbs.

I think I will switch to‎ braid.

If I am going to be running divers, and planers with a big toungued lure, what pound braid do you guys suggest? And what weight for my floro leader?

Thanks a lot guys.

PCM.

I'm using 30 lbs braid for Lake Trout. A 8 ft 30 lb fluorocarbon leader to the dipsy. From the dipsy a 6 inch snupper and about 4 ft of 30 lb Berkley Transoptic to the lure. I just use the Transoptic from the dipsy to the lure because it's cheap to replace when it gets scuffed up.

The leaders might be heavy but I was catching fish so I stuck with it.

I only use 20 lb braid for planers and had no problem fishing for walleye.

I've used leadcore for three years now and I'm not sure what I think about it. I've used the leadcore to troll reef runners and caught some fish but I don't think it's better that a snap weight.

I hate to give up on the leadcore. I still experiment with it. Maybe someday I'll figure it out.

30-50lb braid straight to the dipsy and 6’ or so of leader 20-30lb mono to the lure.

I run one dipsy on braid
One with torpedo strand wire.
Wire is nice when fleas are thick.
Always put a rubber snubber between your
Spoon and the back of the dipsy.
It will give some shock absorption before breaking your line
If a big fish hammers it.
Check out the spoonpullers forum for a lot of “how to”
On big water fishing.
Hope this helps.

This is what I would do.
I mostly use wire dipsys for Salmon.
No snubbers required. You'll get a better hook set without them and less tangles. Just use 20-30# Big Game after the dipsey. This has enough stretch.
Worked for these...

30-40 lb power pro or your fave braid work just fine. With 6-8’ 20lb mono to your lure. Make sure you use a snubbler. Braid works amazing very easy releases as there is no stretch. I use 30lb myself but when re load probably 40. With the braid the dia is so small they really dive well.

Snubbers are unnecessary. They create a weak point and create a bungee affect that causes tangles. I would suggest skipping them. Just set your drag correctly...

Every one in a while I get a bad dose of fishalitous and can't make it in to work. The only known cure is to go fishing.
