I was out for a drive today checking to see where the guys were fishing with my buddy and the topic came up of real vs artificial bait. I know in the summer we use lots of plastics for walleye and have good luck. Not having done a lot of ice fishing, I was wondering does many anglers use artificial baits and what the success is? Any help is appreciated, Thanks Tom

I mostly use a spoon tipped with a couple minnows . I have no faith in artificial when the fish are slower. That said I've fished with my buddy who cleaned up with a bare jigging rap.

I've always used minnows in the winter. Really like the plastic in the summer.

In the winter, they have more time to inspect the lure to see if its the real McCoy ; you often see in the flasher, eyes coming up and swimming away, making you curse, "oh crap, come back, come back". Thus, real bait would trigger them better, I would think. While trolling in open water, they have to make quick decision to pounce on it ("fast food") so artificials should work better than jigging.

I usually use live bait and love minnows in the winter. I'm trying to branch out into more lures this year and just picked up slab grabber to try out so hopefully that will be a good option.
