Hello,

I'm planning a fishing day trip with the guys on March 21 at Bay of Quinte. My understanding is that the area will be open for public free fishing. Can someone please advise on which areas are good for off shore fishing?

There’s almost no species “in season” at that time. There will also likely still be ice in a lot of areas.

Did you mean may?

Okay sounds good thanks. The boys really want to come in March and discover the area before the good weather comes out. Is there other areas close to the west towards to Toronto?

Hi SSAID

Just to clarify, all the pan fish are in season on Quinte (perch, crappies as well as white bass and more) - mainly walleye and pike are out of season now until first weekend in May.

The ice is disappearing quickly - once the small bays are ice free, you'll have not issue catching some fresh perch.

Good luck and be safe around shorelines this time of year.

Plus in Ontario there is no free public fishing on March 21st, so you would need a fishing licence. Here are the free fishing dates in Ontario.

Four times a year, Canadian residents can fish in Ontario without buying a fishing licence, during:

Family Fishing Weekend in February (February 15-17, 2020)
Mother’s Day Weekend in May (May 9-10, 2020)
Father’s Day Weekend in June (June 20-21, 2020)
Family Fishing Week in July (July 4-12, 2020)

If you are looking to fish March 21st I would look closer to Toronto, maybe some back bays or harbors might be free of ice and you could fish for pike or panfish. Or check out any of the rivers flowing into Lake Ontario you could fish from shore for rainbow and brown trout at the river mouths of Lake Ontario.

For the Bay of Quinte best to come in May when walleye is open or later in June when bass is open.

Best of luck and be safe.

JimW makes excellent point: all those creeks off Lake O east of Toronto (with public access) all have steelhead/rainbows staging and in them now. Some great action to be had much closer to your location.

Take a drive to mouth of Port Hope and you can check out the scene and possibly get some more advice from the locals there.

Good luck!!

Thank you very much guys, very helpful. Yes after trying out fishing on the Niagara Whirlpool on family fishing weekend, the boys really enjoyed it and I got 7 of them licensed, so we should be okay on that. I really appreciate it, I will look for places closer to Toronto or might come in March for some perch and again in May for Walleye. We are just trying to explore areas and learn at the moment.

Hello guys,

Just would like to get an update, is the bay frozen or covered with snow? And any closure anyone is aware off due to COVID-19?
