Took my first attempt today at fishing browns. Fished from Wellington to outlet river. Depths from 5-10' with spoons (stingers/NK) and minnow baits(Rapala/Redfin's). No bites to show for 3.5 hours. Water temps were 35 in front of Wellington, 36.5 bottom of Athol Bay. Was good to be out after winter. Water was very murky.

Any tips for a newbie to browns?

Good job in getting out. Sorry no tips, never fished Wellington for browns. Maybe still a bit early, water still cool??

Your murky water comment may be a contributor to your poor success. You might move out deeper until you find clear water. Or maybe move to a new clear water area. BATMAN

Thanks so much for your report. Us locals were waiting to see if it was a member here. Congratulations on being the first out. You had a beautiful day, weather wise. PS, fish the edge of the coloured water

Where do you usually put in to fish that area. Is it one or two rods in that zone. Thanks

It’s 2 rods on fmz20 (Lake Ontario) and you can launch in Wellington. It’s a few miles run from there along the beach.

Is there any chance of getting in to some browns with nothing but a 14 foot boat with a 9.9 outboard? I generally stay out of the big lake, but I figure on a calm day if I stay near shore I should be fine...

Watch the weather and fish close to your exit out on the lake, like from Wellington, either fish towards West Point or along the western shore, try and stay in the lee if you can.

Hope that helps.
