I have 4 wire diver rods. 2 are cold waters and the longer rods are blue diamond both from okuma. I have put the torpedo roller tips on all. I think okuma makes a dipsy rod with the roller at tip. ?white diamond? Shimano makes a full roller rod ?talora? I think you are near $300 for one.

As suggested earlier, getting matching setups helps. You will be able to tell from the bend in the rods if something isnt running right.

When you get your setups. First time out deploy the wire with a heavy casting spoon or dipsy in released position and let out as much wire as possible then reel it back in.

When deploying your fishing setups. Clicker on and I thumb the reel the whole way out. Going out to fast will pretty well guarantee a tangle. The dipsy will dive faster than your paddle/dr. and they are always rotating tying everything nice and tight. (Face in palms)

All of this is worth it!!! Salmon hit my dipsy setups more than anything else I run.

In deploying my dipsy, I set on clicker and loosen the drag so that wire line is taken out under tension. I keep an eye on the counter and when I reach the targeted distance, I ratchet up the drag to the point where you will hear the click of the drag when line tension increases due to other factors (ie engine surge, wave, turning a corner). And as C stated never deploy your dipsey without any tension.

Just noticed that my down rigger rod is only medium. It is a Shimano TDR 8' that I was using on the back lakes. Should it be medium/heavy for lake Ontario trout and salmon?
Thanks!

I use their 9' medium for lake O. fish and have not had any issues in managing larger (>20 lbs) salmon.

O boy what a can of worms lol just have fun don't get to into it until you need to you have two riggers learn to use them releases and weights (sharks) are your beginning point now. Depth and boat control. your rods and reals will be just fine for now. learn to use them the web site is spoon pullers.com all you need to know is there we are always there to help. if your Big Jons have steel cable loose it NOW run Scotty 300lb. braid you won't have to thank me later just trust me. any and I mean any questions about big water rigging copper lead dipseys boards just message me.short of steel 12 strand 30 lb on dipseys 20 lb. is better but it takes practice not to bust it off, its my favourite the rest catches fish but its like reeling in a fish on a rope but just have fun for now bud. run them inside 35 ft out n down to where you get hits.
