If you were setting a boat up for some big water trolling which route would you go.

Would you choose the Planer board mast and the big boards or would you choose to use the inline boards and why?

The set up will be on a 18 ft Lund and going to be using the setup for Quinte fishing in the fall and trolling Lake Erie for eyes in summer.

I currently run downriggers and dipsy's on Erie but want to add to the options and figure no sense in owning both set ups for boards.

Thanks for the help.

I’m in a 22’ Lund baron magnum and much prefer the inline boards. I have the big john mast and a set of church boards that don’t seem to want to pull away from the boat for some reason. My thinking is that they aren’t big enough... I often run 6 lines and sometimes 8 in my boat with inline boards and rarely have trouble.

Size of the boat makes a difference too because they pull so hard, i have used both and no question the inlines, i still see boats with the big boards and i guess it works for them but ....

We've used both extensively, and agree with inlines most of the time.

BUT... nothing can beat the Height advantage of the Mast if you have a LOT going on in the Boat. it's 'way easier getting around under that mast, and kinda fun watching the lines slide out with the pull of the lures... as long as you've set them up in the proper order.

Hmmm, izzit longest first, or last????

Been too long for these memory banks, but think it's Longest first.~

The big problem with running a mast set up is the turn . the inside line goes limp quick because the boards are out so far. sounds like not a big deal unlit it tightens up again that's when you loose a rod n reel because the dacron just looped the reel n over she goes, inline boards come in three sizes and make for a great setup masts are great to dont get me wrong but unless you have auto pilot and can be sure the boat is going in the direction you want they can be a f...... nightmare never had a big problem going back to pick up an inline

We had a good chuckle last fall. There was a boat with big boards out trolling and they had 2 in line boards running beside the boat also.

I was a little confused.

makes sense to me. the boards are out 150 ft. to ether side. The line to the boards off the boat are 8 ft. in the air inline boards run off the back of the boat can tighten the spread. Iv never done its but makes sense to me especially if you are running copper or lead off the big boards

ill give you a good trick though run a shower curtin hook and attach your line to it with a thin rubber band when the fish hits the rubber band breaks off works great

Thanks for all the great input.

I was leaning towards the in-lines as they are a lot easier to store on the boat and I would get more use out of them in the smaller northern lakes I fish as well. I own a planer board set and mast but have never bothered using as it so i'll get rid of it and put the money toward one in-lines. I figure the mast set up would be better on a big boat with lots of power and storage space.

Depends on where you are and what you want to run. I like the mast for big water and leadcore. You can run them well outside your riggers and dipseys and leadcore doesn't drag them down. Pretty much for lake trout, rainbow trout and salmon out in the big lake.
I like the inlines for smaller water and lighter gear. Only time i use them on the big lake is for browns.
So for me, both have their time and place where they work best for you and it really depends on what you want to do.

I could see a use for both set ups in different situations but I think for me based on the info the in lines will be best and I'll buy a few over sized in lines if I need the extra pull for bigger bait systems.
